  1. CitySetsTMThe High Resolution Downtown Map Product Linefrom Sanborn

  2. Comparative World Trade Center footprint Motivation for Product The insurance industry saw the need for geospatial data to determine the risk from geographically small terrorism attacks compared to geographically large natural disasters. Kobe Earthquake footprint Similar financial losses

  3. Detailed Relative Geography To calculate risk in relation to terrorism, there is a need to know where a property is in relation to potential targets in more detail than a block address range. It is important to know if a building is on same block, down the street, facing toward a potential target, etc.

  4. Product Scope • Accurate building outlines • Point address locations • Building information • Geographic data (streets, coasts, landmarks) To support this need, Sanborn created a dataset with:

  5. Areas of Coverage Only the areas with the highest concentrations of property values were mapped. Example of areas mapped for Los Angeles.

  6. Cities Mapped

  7. Accuracy • National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS) for 1:1200 scale mapping. • Horizontal accuracy: 90% of features within 3.33 feet (1 meter) of true position. • Vertical accuracy: 90% of features within 5 feet (1.5 meter) of true position.

  8. How the Data was Created • Aerial Photography • Ground Control • Aerial Triangulation • Stereo Compilation • Attribution from Sanborn Maps • Field Survey • Extensive Quality Control

  9. 3D Level of Detail • Black outline shows cross section of building •Green lines show placement of building breaklines •Blue dots show elevation measurement •Red outline shows resulting product

  10. Resulting Product Still a “Dumb Map” – selecting a building does not return any data on that building at this point in the process.

  11. Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps Sanborn turned to the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps to add intelligence to the building polygons 12,000+ United States cities and towns Since 1866  Annual field survey, observe construction

  12. 104 100 28 34 Attribution Process The Sanborn maps were scanned and georeferenced to the map data collected from the photography. The following data was then transferred to the building attribute fields: • Street names • Building addresses • Building name • Construction type • Occupancy type • Year built • Number of stories ● WABASH AVE SOUTH BLDG WABASH AVENUE ● STEEL FRAME ●COMMERCIAL ●1893 ●9 EAST WASHINGTON STREET

  13. Attributes  Primary Database on building polygons Building ID Year Built Building Name Roof Height Primary Address Number of Stories Construction Type Lat/Long Occupancy Type Exterior Material Fireproof Type  Secondary Database on point addresses Building ID Alternate Building Name(s) Alternate Address(es) Lat/Long

  14. Field Attribution Performed on basis of Sanborn Map vintage No field survey was conducted for cities updated in 2000 or later: Boston Chicago Detroit New York (Manhattan, Brooklyn) Jersey City Philadelphia San Francisco St. Louis Washington D.C.

  15. Field Attribution Sanborn surveyors went to cities and… • Walked every street • Reviewed every building • Input data digitally • Performed QC on site

  16. Digital photographs Captured during field survey, for the cities surveyed. Selected buildings, all buildings over 19 stories Over 800 photos in 19 cities

  17. Data Quality Control •Extensive Quality Control performed on all data. • Addresses compatible with U.S. Postal Service standards. • All addresses checked with industry standard geocoding software. • Building names and addresses checked against third party sources.

  18. Resulting Product • Accurate building outlines •Attributed point addresses •Building attributes •Street centerlines •Other geographic features

  19. Additional Data Layers:Sanborn Maps • Digital • Mosaicked • Seamless • Single file for each city

  20. Additional Data Layers:Orthophotos •Color •Half foot resolution •Seamless •One file per city

  21. Additional Data Layers:3D models • 3D buildings may be linked to other attribute data • Detailed terrain data

  22. Four Layers of Data 1. Smart Geographic Information Attributed building outlines, point addresses, streets. Includes digital photos of selected buildings. 2. Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps Digital, georeferenced, mosaicked. 3. Digital Orthophoto Imagery Color, half foot resolution, seamless. 4. Three-Dimensional Models Buildings and terrain.

  23. Applications Data incorporated in software from Risk Management Solutions for the insurance industry • New level of risk analysis • Levels of exposure • Set thresholds to limit risk Available directly from Sanborn for all other markets
