Caliph- A successor to the messenger of God. • Arabs spread Islam through preaching, conquest, and trade. • Umayyad expanded their empire and made their capitol Damascus. • 100 hundred years after Muhammad’s death, The Islamic state became a great empire. • They were successful because they were fighting to spread religion and let conquered people practice their own religion. • Many conquered people became Muslims. • Sufis- spent their time praying and teaching Islam, Arab merchants helped spread Islam as well. The Spread of Islam

The quarrel over who would succeed Muhammad split the Muslims into 2 groups , Sunnis and shiites. • Shiites believed that the Ali should succeed Muhammad and all the future caliphs should be Ali’s descendant. • The umayyaas lost power in 750 A.D. • The new abbasid dynasty lasted until 1258. • The abbasids devoted their energies to trade, scholarships , and arts • Baghdad was the new capitol built.   4. Seljuk Turks saw how weak the Abbasids were and took over. • They satisfied themselves by expanding their territory into Baghdad they only controlled government and army. Sultan is a Seljuk ruler. They allowed the Abbasids caliph to still be the religious leader. • The Mongols of central Asia came in 200 years later and ended the Arab Empire. The Seljuk Turks

The Ottoman empire was the largest Muslim empire • In 1453 they seized Constanople,the Byzantine capital • They changed the cities name to Istanbul • Also conquering Syria, Palestine, Eygpt, Mesopotamia, parts of Arabia and North Africa • Suleiman 1 ruled in 1500’s • He built schools, Mosques; he was a brillant general Later Muslim Empires

  7. Moguls created another Muslim empire in india. They used guns and cannons and elephants and horses to conquer territory. The greatest mogul ruler was Akbar. When they banned the building of Hindu temples led to the republicans and parts of the empire broke away and mosques began losing power over their subject and had to deal with European merchants and they increase trade Who were the Moguls?
