The king of the north 11:36-37 36 “Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done. 37 He shall regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall exalt himself above them all.
The king of the north • He exalts himself above any other god including the true God • He blasphemes the true God • He will prosper and be successful until the judgment on the earth (Israel) is done • His religion is unlike what has gone before. • He will at least abstain from sexual activity with women, quite possibly be homosexual
The king of the north 11:38-39 38 But in their place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things. 39 Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain.
The king of the north • He does honor a god, however • The god he worships is probably Satan • Rev. 13:5-6 Beast blasphemes • Rev. 13:2, 4 Satan gives the Beast his power. • “Fortresses” = “strongholds”. “Acropolis” = “walled stronghold build on a hill inside a city” • Temples and shrines were often located there
The king of the north • In Dan. 11:31, this word was used to refer to the Jewish temple (“sanctuary fortress”) • “Lucifer” will be probably be worshipped by the Beast in temple shrines with costly offerings 11:38 (note: “pleasant things” = “treasures”) • Notice Ez. 28:12-15, 17 - Lucifer loves these things • Luke 4:5-8 Lucifer gives to the Beast what Jesus refused.
The king of the north 40 “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. 41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape
The king of the north 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. 44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him.
The king of the north • At this time, the King of the North does not possess world-wide power • The King of the South (Egypt) launches an attack on the King of the North • The world does not yet worship the Beast; he is still the “King of the North” • When attacked, the King of the North vigorously responds with an assault from land and sea, invading the South. • Even in today’s world, Egypt has been concerned with the nations to the North and East. • Either Egypt here launches its own bid for power, or has concern about stopping the King of the North before it’s too late.
The king of the north • The type of attack Egypt launces is not mentioned. It may be a missile or air attack. • The response involves “chariots” (tanks?), ships and cavalry and seems to go through Israel • Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and part of Iran are involved in the North. • Seems to avoid modern Jordan as Ammon, Moab, and Edom are all within the borders of modern day Jordan. This may be due to an alliance. We don’t know why. Another possibility is their familial relationship to Israel.
The king of the north It may be that the treaty with Israel allows the King to pass through. Isaiah 28:14-15 is not yet fulfilled…14 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scornful men,Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,15 Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death,And with Sheol we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through,It will not come to us,For we have made lies our refuge,And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.”
The king of the north • Many nations are defeated by the King of the North • Is Israel’s treaty with him secret “lies”? • If this man is as he is shaping up to be, no wonder Israeli leaders believe they’ve made a “covenant with death”, with hell itself • The passage of his armies will be frightening
The king of the north 18 Your covenant with death will be annulled,And your agreement with Sheol will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through,Then you will be trampled down by it.19 As often as it goes out it will take you;For morning by morning it will pass over,And by day and by night; It will be a terror just to understand the report.”
The king of the north • “overflowing” in Daniel 11:40 is the same word in Isaiah 28:15 • The campaign of the King of the North is successful, as many nations fall before him (40, 42) • Libya and Ethiopia (Modern Sudan) fall under his power, as probably Yemen, Oman, the Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. • The King has great financial gain from this (43), in part to offer to his god, Lucifer (11:38) • However, at the moment of his victory, trouble comes for the King from the Northeast.
The king of the north • It may involve Israel’s leadership; it may involve the two witnesses. It DOES get his attention. • He leaves Egypt “to destroy and annihilate many” • He pitches his tent outside Jerusalem on the northeast (11:45) between the Mediterranean and Dead Seas, facing “the glorious holy mountain” (the Temple Mount), probably north of the city, in the upper Kidron Valley. • He will come to his end, and none shall help him”
The king of the north Daniel 11:29-35 “At the appointed time he shall return and go toward the south; but it shall not be like the former or the latter. 30 For ships from Cyprus shall come against him; therefore he shall be grieved, and return in rage against the holy covenant, and do damage.
The king of the north “So he shall return and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. 31 And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation. 32 Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.
The king of the north 33 And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering. 34 Now when they fall, they shall be aided with a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue. 35 And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time.
The king of the north Daniel 12:1 “At that time Michael shall stand up,The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble,Such as never was since there was a nation,Even to that time.
The king of the north Matthew 24:15-22 15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!
The king of the north 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
The king of the north Daniel 12:2-3 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake,Some to everlasting life,Some to shame and everlasting contempt.3 Those who are wise shall shineLike the brightness of the firmament,And those who turn many to righteousnessLike the stars forever and ever.
The king of the north Daniel 12:2-3 People will either face eternal life or eternal hell. Believers who are faithful will have a better future.
The king of the north Daniel 12:11-12 11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days.
The king of the north Daniel 12:11-12 Preparation for the Kingdom!
The king of the north • The details and specifics of these prophecies is stunning and no other explanation is possible but that they are supernatural and once again confirm the reliability of the Scriptures • We see a world continuing to shape up anticipating this time • Before 1948, Israel didn’t exist as a national entity. The movement of nations, the rise of power of the nations of the Middle East, the decline of American dominance, the advent of weapons of mass destruction, the necessity of European unity, the rise of China, the technological advances which make possible some of the prophecies before unimaginable should all give the believer great confidence in God’s word and the faith that is ours.
The king of the north When the storm clouds gather, we can have hope that they gather under the sovereign control of our coming King. When sadness surrounds us over our world, we should always remember that joy comes in the morning and daybreak belongs to God, as Peter wrote in 2 Peter 1:19 when discussing the Transfiguration and what it meant to us… “And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts”
