Today’s Internet But it is the only one that can ensure: * explosive growth and * convergence of the information work, mass media and human cooperation Today’s Internet is not designed for the: * work of millions of users * existing traffic jam * use of multimedia and * interaction in a real time Today’s Internet does not provide: * reliable performance for the end users * stimulation for cooperation on development of the new network capabilities * network environment for testing of the new network technologies * development of revolutionary network applications
Internet 2 INTERNET2 PROJECT: NGI (Next Generation Internet initiative): - - 34 AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES – the goal of creation of the new national infrastructure for high performance network applications and new generation technologies BILL CLINTON – 100 millions of dollars each year in the time period of 3 years - NSF (1995.) – Cooperation Agreement (MCI WorldCom) => very high speed Backbone Network Service (vBNS) - COOPERATION – corporation partners (Cisco Systems, Nortel Networks, Qwest Communi- cations, Juniper Networks) => ABILENE - vBNS– bandwith about 2,4 Gbps with the plans of future upgrading - UCAID (1998.) – parent organisation of the I2 project - ABILENE – bandwith about 2,4 Gbps with the plans for upgrading to 9,6 Gbps by the end of 2003 . ABILENE and vBNS ensured new network capabilities: * High bandwith => HIGH-PERFORMANCE NETWORK ENVIRONMENT - INTERNET 2 * Low latency * Low latency variation (jitter) * Multicasting
Tele-immmersion * Alan H. Weis (Advanced Network & Services) – Tele-immersion - leading edge network application * Engagement of Jaron Lanier– National Tele-Immersion Initiative (NTII 1997.) * NTII interconnected the work of 4 research teams (1997 - 2000): 1. Advanced Network & Services, Armonk, New York 2. Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island 3. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 4. University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania * At the moment 3 groups collaborate on the project: 1. Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), Pittsburgh 2. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina 3. University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
What is Tele-immersion? Def. (Jaron Lanier):TELE-IMMERSIONis a new medium of human interaction that creates illusion that the user is in the same physical space like the other participants, although in reality other participants are thousands of miles away. This is a new telecommunication medium that combines aspects of virtual reality with 3D videoconferencing. Def. (Internet2 project): TELE-IMMERSION enables users at geographically distributed sites to collaborate in a real time in a shared, simulated, hybrid environment as if they were in the same physical room. It is the ultimate synthesis of media technologies: * 3D environment scanning - 3D reconstruction based on display * projective and display technologies * tracking technologies * audio technologies * robotics and haptics and powerful networking (high bandwith, low latency i low latency variation) => ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING NETWORK APPLICATION !

Potential applications and the future of Tele-immersion Office of the future Future TI surgical trainings Business life, E-commerce, scientific and research cooperation, education, arts,… =>PROTOTYPE APPLICATION=> NSF ITR dotation (2001.): $ 2,65 mil. => Cooperation (UNC, Upenn, PSC) on development of a high-quality 3D tele- immersion in a real time on a greater distances (2000. - East Coast of the USA) => GOAL ACHIEVED: 15th Super Computing 2002 conference (December 2002.) - the boost in computer power = image an entire room in a real time - acquisition, processing and display in 3 remote sites = the first “Network computer”
