  1. “Jonah Runs to God,” Jonah, chapter twoOutline of the Chapter: • Jonah in the belly of the “great fish,” Jonah 1:17-2:1. • Jonah “prayed to the Lord,” Jonah 2:1-9. • The fish “vomited Jonah onto dry ground,” Jonah 2:10.

  2. Jonah in the Belly of the “Great Fish,” Jonah 1:17-2:9. • Unbelievers ridicule this, but With God “all things are possible,” Matthew 19:26. • To deny this happened is to question and intelligence and integrity of Jesus. • Believing this happened is no more difficult than believing other miracles occurred. • There are even now fish capable of swallowing a man!

  3. Jonah “Prayed to the Lord,” Jonah 2:1-9 • He “cried out to the Lord because of” His “affliction,” Jonah 2:1-2. • The God from Whom he had sought to flee, Jonah 1:3, is the God to Whom he now cries out to! It is common to cry out to God during times of “distress,” Psalm 120:1; 18:4-6; I Timothy 2:8. • Amazingly, God “answered Jonah,” Jonah 2:2,10!

  4. Examine the Prayer More Closely: • “Out of the belly of sheol I cried, and You heard my voice,” Jonah 2:2; cf. Psalm 18:5-6. • “You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,” Jonah 2:3. • “Then I said, I have been cast out of your sight,” Jonah 2:4. Reminiscent of Psalm 31:22 • “Yet will I look again toward your holy temple,” Jonah 2:4,7. Daniel 6:10; Psalm 5:7.

  5. Examine the Prayer (continued) • “The waters surrounded me… weeds were wrapped around my head,” Jonah 2:5. • “I went down to the moorings of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed behind me forever,” Jonah 2:6. • “The moorings of the mountains” may be understood literally. • “The earth with its bars” was to Jonah a dungeon, from which he could not remove self.

  6. Examine the Prayer (continued) • “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord…,” Jonah 2:7. • “Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own mercy,” Jonah 2:8. cf. Psalm 118:1-4,29; Psalm 115:3-8. • “But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving: I will pay what I have vowed.Salvation is of the Lord,” Jonah 2:9. cf. Deuteronomy 23:21-23; Ecclesiastes 5:4-5.

  7. The Fish “Vomited Jonah onto dry land,” Jonah 2:10! • This confirms the statement in verse two, “He heard me.” • This confirms the statement in verse nine, “Salvation (deliverance) is of the Lord.” • Note: Jonah prayed this prayer while in the belly of the fish, but he wrote what he had prayedafter he was delivered from the belly of the fish.

  8. Some Practical Lessons to Be Gleaned from Jonah, Chapter two: • Things often get worse in life when people avoid their responsibilities! • Too many people wait until they are in trouble to pray! • No Place is off limited to earnest prayer! • Prayer from the Depths may be heard in the Heights! • Backsliders are often given a second chance!

  9. Conclusion: • God’s Commission to Jonah reflects His deep concern for people of all nationalities. • Jesus died for all, Hebrews 2:9. • Jesus invites all to come to Him, Matthew 11:28-30.
