The National CommitteesWhat do we do? • Accountable to Membership Representation Committee • Represent the views of RCN representatives on employment; health and safety and lifelong learning and advise and recommend RCN responses to relevant issues • Contribute to the development of RCN policy on employment, health and safety and lifelong learning

The National CommitteesWhat do we do? • Promote the value of safety representatives • Agree programmes for the national conference • Appoint members to sit on other RCN working group, Task & Finish groups etc. • Link back to regional/country reps • Submit items to Congress agenda committee and attend RCN Congress

  7. Key achievements 2012 • Lone Working Campaign – lone worker survey January 2012 • Sharps Directive – RCN guidance and workshops for members • Tools of the Trade – dermatitis and glove use • Congress 2012 • Shift work guidance • Stress survey

Key challenges ahead... • Deregulation agenda • No proactive inspections by HSE • Increase in workloads, money worries, change, job insecurity = increase in stress • Presenteeism • Working longer – impact of physically and emotionally demanding work • Health and safety taking the brunt of cuts • Chemical hazards – cleaning?? Any more....?

Opportunities... • Key message – what’s good for staff is good for patients • Safety representatives make workplaces safer • Sharps regulations • Shift working • Making health and safety issues central to negotiating strategies • Working with others...allies and spread the workload of activists Any more....?
