What is community Health? “The first focus area – ‘community’ – encompasses population groups and the locus (e.g., place, venue, or other unit) of programs, interventions, and other actions.” “The second area – ‘health’ – may be defined differently as a function of a community’s experience and expectations.” “The third area – interventions – encompasses the scope of the intervention(s) being delivered within the community, and reflects the input, needs, perspectives, and goals of communities as they work to improve their health.”  “The final area – the ‘science of community health’ – encompasses the methods that are used by the field to develop and evaluate the evidence base that underlies the conception, design, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of interventions.” Goodman, R. Core principles • “Implement and use results of community health assessments (e.g., measuring and characterizing risk factors within, and the health status of, the community) as a core element in improving a community’s health” • Engaging community, government, and other partners to create programs working to improve the health of the community Goodman, R.   4. Why is it important? • If a community is unhealthy they cannot be: • Active • Productive • Increased health care cost • Increased burden on the system and families • Increased stress—drinking/smoking • And the list goes on…

Health people 2020/2030 • “Community health workers are frontline public health workers who serve as a bridge between underserved communities and health care systems” (Health people 2020) • Webinars are currently taking place with voting on over 30 recommendation for health people 2030 • Recommendations include including data and engaging local level to improve health • Going beyond state and federal data for reliance on the implementation and institutions of programing

  8. Partners in parks • In July of 2018 the City of Lake Charlese launched its citywide Partners in Parks initiative aimed at investing private and public dollars to improve park infrastructure and expand programming.

  10. 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment: Data Overview • COVERED 5 PARISH AREA • ALLEN, BEAURGARD, CALCASIEU, JEFF DAVIS, CAMERON • Economic concerns • Social concerns • Physical health concerns • Mental health concerns • Identified chronic health • Top inpatient diagnosis—mood disorders

We must shift our thinking… • If the top inpatient diagnosis was mood disorders—depression, anxiety, stress, etc. what type of environment are our kids living? • What are you doing to help reduce stress in your environment ? • Are you functioning in a culture of wellness? How can you improve community health ? • THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX—Radio, social media, church • The health of the community is a reflection of the health of the people • Engage government • Engage the faith community • Implement new initiatives in the school/community • After school exercise programs • Go noodle • Are you visible to the community, students, and staff
