Implementing Universal Healthcare From Highlands to the Coast of Ecuador • Objectives: • Gain an understanding of the Ecuadorian healthcare system through exposure to both urban and rural government institutions. • Obtain practical experience in the institutional barriers to providing free care. • Clinical Rotations: • 2 weeks in Quito (includes Medical Spanish course) • 2 weeks in Santa Elena Participant: Virginia Crowder

Quito • Maternidad Isidro Mayora: • Public, teaching hospital; 400 beds • Rotation in the Salo de Partos: →Morning rounds →Observed deliveries →Scrubbed in for C-Sections • Centro de Salud • Public, primary care clinic and community outreach center → Home visits →Ob/gyn, internal med, and peds shadowing

  11. Santa Elena • Hospital La Libertad • 45 bed capacity • Rotated through: →ER (minor traumas, ID, suturing) →Outreach (Well Child exams) →General med →General Surgery (Assist in surgery!)
