SEVIS II for Current Students Office of International Programs April 2010
Purpose of this workshop: • Review of immigration status • What is SEVIS? • What is SEVIS II? • How will SEVIS II affect students? • How will OIP assist?
Non-immigrant Documents • Passport • Visa • I-20, DS-2019 • I-94 Card
Status • Status is a legal condition, not a physical thing • It is dynamic • It can be acquired, maintained, changed, and lost • Students must be proactive • I-20’s, electronic records, visa stamps are indicators of status
Maintaining Status • Fulltime enrollment from start date to end date (unless you have been authorized to attend part-time) • Request permission before dropping • Finish degree by end date • Never work without authorization • If on OPT, report employment
Maintaining status, cont’d… • Report address changes within 10 days of change • Keep immigration documents current (passport, I-20); visa may be expired • Stay in contact with OIP
What is SEVIS? • The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a web-based program to track and monitor U.S. schools and programs, students, exchange visitors and their dependents throughout the duration of their studies and OPT (if applicable) • SEVIS was implemented on January 30, 2003
TODAY’S SEVIS: • Only accessed by school & government officials • I-20s / DS-2019s are a paper version of an electronic SEVIS record • Students have multiple SEVIS record numbers (in some cases) • I-20s must be signed to demonstrate valid status
TODAY’S SEVIS, cont’d… • Students must report changes of address, major, etc to school officials who update SEVIS
SEVIS II • SEVIS II was scheduled to be released February 2010 • Postponed to April 2010 • On April 6, 2010, SEVIS announced that there is no set date for the release • Possible pending deadline for student use
Highlights of SEVIS II • Responsibility shifts from UTEP to students • Paperless system • Creation of unique Immigration Identification Number (IIN) • All international students and scholars create and have direct access to maintain their own immigration record • I-20’s / DS-2019s will eventually be eliminated • Visa will be scanned at port of entry & customs databases will indicate green, yellow or red
Impact on Current Students • Have to create and maintain their SEVIS II online accounts • Need additional support to adapt to new changes • Students will have to update addresses on their own • Students will be able to check if they are admissible to enter the country • NOTE: We have address change forms
How Office of International Programs will Help • SEVIS II workshops • Additional guidance (pending) • Info on OIP Website • Link to www.educationusa.info • Broadcast emails • Reference material • Expert knowledge regarding SEVIS II
