  1. BA271 Week 3 Lecture Dave Sullivan (Opening comment about help sessions in Bexell 324 on Thursdays @ 4 p.m.)

  2. Career Forum • I strongly recommend attending the Career Symposium this Friday in Bexell Hall. It starts at 9:30 and goes until 2:30 with a host of quality speakers and sessions. This is one of the best ways to meet and network with recent graduates. • Here is the link to the program: http://www.bus.oregonstate.edu/services/symposium.htm

  3. Goals for today… • Open source s/w, MediaWiki, & Nvu • Website Plan will consist of two files similar to: • Sample.ppt • Sample.vsd • Basic Website Project • Final Website Project

  4. Open source software • What is open source software? Computer software for which the source code is freely available Typically is developed in a cooperative manner • Nvu’s website • MediaWiki website • SourceForge.Net • Linux / RedHat

  5. Choosing a website editor • Some website development tools are incredibly powerful and take all the guesswork and fuss out of constructing a business or e-commerce website. • I want you to learn how to create web pages and link them by hand. • Focus your attention on organizing ideas into a simple and understandable collection of web pages, writing well, and illustrating your web pages with appropriate images.

  6. Basic Website Project • Requirementswebsite/website-project.htm#Requirements • Choose a website topic • Begin building website (at least first page) • Verify your work is in the correct location:student-pages/web-project.htm

  7. Choose a website topic • First choice: build a website about an actual business or organization • Disguise its name (such as "Goto's Sandwiches" rather than "Togo's Sandwiches") • Avoid or repackage truly personal topics

  8. Creating websites people will visit Good topic choice Good design vs. bad design • Sample 1: Samba Communications • Sample 2: A local band • Sample websites from last year

  9. Website Plan • Describe a planned website project in a PowerPoint set of slides • Sample files: SAMPLE.PPT and SAMPLE.VSD

  10. Website Plan -- Visio Drawing • Use Visio to draw how all web pages will be linked • Visio is on all computers in Bexell Hall • Getting your own copy of Visio • I placed a sample Visio file at SAMPLE.VSD

  11. A sample Visio drawing

  12. Sample Visio drawing

  13. Activities you should do • Extend the BA271 wiki • Complete Treasure Hunt assignment • Choose a website topic • Build PowerPoint presentation • Record sound files for transitions • Build a Visio Presentation • Test that your work is at the correct location for grading • Begin building website (at least first page)
