  2. Just a few statistics • In March 2008 the Pew Internet and American Life Project released the results of a study of the Mobile Web • In April Connecticut Legal Services issued report of client surveys, showing similar usage trends

  3. Things are Changing 62% of all Americans are part of a wireless, mobile population that participates in digital activities away from home or work. 58% of adult Americans have used a cell phone or personal digital assistant (PDA) to do at least one of ten mobile non-voice data activities

  4. It’s not just the white middle class African Americans and English-speaking Latinos are more likely than white Americans to use non-voice data applications on their cell phones.

  5. Cell phones are in widespread use in all segments of the American population: • 84% of English-speaking Hispanics have cell phones. • 74% of white Americans have cell phones. • 71% of black Americans have cell phones.

  6. Among those who have cell phones: • eighteen percent of white Americans, • twenty-two percent of Hispanics and • twenty-seven percent of black Americans have used them to access the internet for information.

  7. Low-income users are significant % Within the population of people who have accessed digital data or tools on the go, twenty-four percent have household incomes of $25,000 annually or less.

April 2008 Connecticut Legal Services Report • 51% of callers had access to a computer. • 42% of callers had internet access. • 35% of callers had an e-mail account, and 31% check e-mail at least once a week. • 58% of callers had a cell phone. • 32% of callers use text messaging from a cell phone.
