  2. Indian railways world’s largest bureaucratic organization In this case we analyzed the factors that led to the turnaround of the Indian railways from low to high performing organization. A case study on IR could focus on multiple fact Detailed analysis of the turnaround, Critical Appraisal of the strategies, Sustenance of its growth, Role of organizational structure etc. Indian Railways (IR), which was declared to be heading towards bankruptcy as per the Expert Group today it is the second largest profit making Public Sector Undertaking after ONGC.

  3. PROBLEMS IN INDIAN RAILWAYS Lack of leadership in right direction. Cheap politics and infrastructure utilities. Capacity utilization was not there. Freight and passenger tariff was not managed properly. Deficiencies of new ideas. Lack of cohesiveness in railway.

  4. What is Leadership ? • Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals. • Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent.

  5. Types of Leadership ? There are distinctively 2 types of leadership. 1. Charismatic Leadership. 2. Transformational Leadership.

  6. Question for Discussion • It is the leadership that has turned around the IR .Do you agree with the statement. Discuss.

  7. Answer Yes, it is the leadership of Lalu prasad Yadav which turned around the Indian railways. Leadership set the vision, direction and tone in front of Indian railways. For transformation it is the leadership which shown faith on 1.4million employees. Due to leadership it was able to generate surplus of 200 billion with same people and same resources. Increased capacity at zero cost value added services optimal utilization of resources

  8. Answer In case of IR it is not true even with most other Govt. organization it is not true. The policies and money is good in govt. sector only thing in which it lags is a good leader to run it. The role of the railways is too critical for the Indian economy. Highly visible national symbol.

  9. Answer Comparing leadership of Dhirubhai Ambani and Lalu Prasad Yadav is not justifiable or good Dhirubhai Ambani arose from ashes Lalu Prasad Yadav had given the responsibility of already established firm. He identified the shortcomings and tried to improve on them. Time period.

  12. Conclusion In this case study we looked at the growth achieved by the Indian railways in the past few years and major strategies responsible for them. These include capacity enhancement, better utilization of the current capacity and also schemes to increase the existing sources of revenue. The total control of IR should not be transferred into private hands. Focus should be on commercialization rather than privatization
