  2. Supercells • Are the least common thunderstorms but categorized to be dangerous consisting strong deepening upward motion of rising air parcels called a mesocyclone. • When strong winds are rotating horizontally above the Earth’s surface it will eventually tilt from the upward motion of rising air, then to form a violent column rotation of air extending from a cumulonimbus cloud to the ground now known as a tornado. tornado-overview.htm • Tornadoes are common within supercell thunderstorms, but only a quarter of mesocyclones spawn tornadoes. • Tornadoes can also form in non-supercell storms .

  3. Tornadoes • Non-supercell tornadoes form when there is already vertical rotation happening near the Earth’s surface moving upward. • - Two examples are landspouts and waterspouts. • waterspout tornado pictures - Google Search Spectacular pictures of nature at its wildest, captured by the storm chasers who risk their lives to follow twisters | Mail Online Waterspout • Two most factors in potentially distinguishing tornadic supercells are the muggy feeling from the high humidity and the low-level rapid changing winds in the vertical called vertical wind shear. 4. Radars • Radars are only able to detect the circulations of mesocyclones; radars are not able to detect tornadoes themselves, but a group of researchers from the US formulated a strategy. • Combining observations taken at close proximity from the storm with radar data, researchers can improve tornado warnings.
