  4. A short survey

  5. THE S-T-E-M • SCIENCE: • Study of the natural world • TECHNOLOGY: • The modification of the natural world to meet a human need or want. • ENGINEERING: • Design and testing of solutions to everyday problems • MATH: • The study of “patterns and relationships” among quantities, numbers, and shapes(AAAS, 1993, p. 23)

  6. What is STEM?

  7. Why sTEm? • Apply science, technology, engineering, or mathematics content to answer complex questions, to investigate global issues, and to develop solutions for challenges and real world problems. • Apply science, technology, engineering, or mathematicscontent to answer complex questions, to investigate global issues, and to develop solutions for challenges and real world problems. • Apply science, technology, engineering, or mathematics content to answer complex questions, to investigate global issues, and to develop solutions for challenges and real world problems. • Apply science, technology, engineering, or mathematics content to answer complex questions, to investigate global issues, and to develop solutions for challenges and real world problems. 8. How do you plan a stem unit? In stages!

  9. Define Problem or Need Select & Test http://nsdl.org Engineering design process What similar things exist? Does it work? Modify & redesign Research & Gather Info Brainstorming Does solution meet need? Proof of concept Propose Design Solutions AnalyzeEvaluateSolutions

  10. Select & Test Propose Design Solutions http://nsdl.org Criteria What have others learned? Research & Gather Info What do you still need to find out? Constraints Define Problem or Need There is always more than one possible way to solve a problem …. lots of brainstorming involved. This is where really creative ideas come from. Engineers evaluate multiple design solutions to determine if and how well they meet the design criteria. AnalyzeEvaluateSolutions Per qualitative or quantitative rating system, a final design is selected. The final design is then thoroughly tested.

  11. Science

  12. technology and Engineering • International Technology and Engineering Educators Association • Benchmarks and Standards for Technological Literacy (STL) • Suggestions: • Skype a scientist (or family member!) • Create a spreadsheet and analyze data • Watch or create video • Create a class wiki or blog to communicate ideas • Internet research • Use class polls and social media (yes, even Twitter!)

  13. So what about math?

  14. SOME examples http://www.multiurl.com/g/g14 Forces and Motion Chemistry/Phase Changes Earth/Plate Tectonics

  15. Discussion http://www.multiurl.com/g/g14 • What do you notice? • What do you like? • What do you wonder about?

  16. Evaluating a STEM unit • Does it engage students in the engineering design process? • Do students address a real-world problem? • Do they work in teams to solve this problem? • Does it address science, technology, engineering and math? • **BONUS: Do students have the opportunity to learn about related STEM careers?

  17. STEM resources http://www.cpsstem.weebly.com

  18. Remember… Mistakes and failures are opportunities for learning.

  19. Today’s goal • MPER Study Group Goal: • To draft one STEM unit of instruction with grade-level teams. • Your personal goals:

  20. Divide and conquer • 6th grade: Hill 305 • 7th grade: Townsend 105 • 8th grade: Townsend 204 • Share your goals. • Decide on a plan of “attack.” • Attack it!

  21. A(nother) short survey http://tinyurl.com/cpsstemsurvey

  22. How did you do? Designate a grade-level team member to share. • What did you accomplish? • What work do you still need to do? • What resources were most helpful?

  23. Ask Yourself… • Does it engage students in the engineering design process? • Do students address a real-world problem? • Do they work in teams to solve this problem? • Does it address science, technology, engineering and math? • BONUS: Do students have the opportunity to learn about related STEM careers?

  24. Lingering questions/Challenges

  25. Next steps • MPER Study Group Goal: • To develop AND implement at least one STEM unit before January 2014. • Collect student data relevant to learning outcomes for STEM unit. • Your personal goals:

  26. Thank you! Next study group session: Friday, January 24th
