  2. Paleo Indians • They lived about 10,000 years ago. • These Indians were nomadic; followed around herds of mammoths. • Paleo Indians created the atlatl; a flexible slink-like tool; used to throw spears.

  3. Archaic Indians Middle 5000 B.C to 4000 B.C First Indians in Georgia to hunt shellfish (and any type of seafood) Didn’t move around as much because food was easy to get. Early • 8000 B.C to 5000 B.C • Used small weapons made of stone • Mammoths became extinct. Late • 4000 B.C to 1000 B.C • Created a grooved axe to cut down trees • Clay containers were made to store meat, grains, and animal skins.

  4. Woodland Indians • Lived from about 1000 B.C to 100 A.D. • They invented the bow n’ arrow. • First to really plant squash, wild greens and sunflowers in GA. • Believed in the after life.

  5. Mississippian Indians • 700 A.D to 1600 A.D • Lived near the Mississippi River. • Their dress was more complex. • They built palisades. (like fences)
