  2. 2 1 8 Places In The News ▶Reading Comprehension The Kuril Islands -A Disputed Territory between Russia and Japan Next year, Russian ministers, including the defense minister, will visit the Kuril Islands, the center of a long territorial dispute between Russia and Japan. The purpose of their visit will be to explore various development and support systems for the islands. The name Kuril originates from Ainu. ‘Kur’ of Kuril means man. Both countries have claimed sovereignty of the Kuril Islands since the 1952 Treaty of San Francisco after the Second World War. The territory stretches approximately 1,300 km northeast of Hokkaido to Kamchatka, separating the Sea of Okhotsk from the North Pacific Ocean. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Kuril Islands were explored by Henry James, DanilaAntsiferov, I. Kozyrevsky, and others. Including 35 active volcanoes and 100 dormant ones, the Kuril Islands consist of 56 islands in total. It is not uncommon to see hot springs around the islands. In addition, earthquakes frequently occur. The weather is extremely cold with long winters during which heavy snow falls. But in summer, it is mostly cool, and often foggy with a high percentage of humidity. With resources such as sulfur and iron pyrites, the islands are not only in a valuable strategic position but also hold potential economic value. However, fishing remains the most important local industry. At present, the islands belong to Sakhalin Oblast, an area under Russian jurisdiction. Under the Treaty of St. Petersburg signed in 1875, it was agreed that Japan would relinquish all rights to Sakhalin in exchange for Russia ceding the Kuril Islands to Japan. After the Second World War, the islands were returned to Russia. Japan’s sovereignty claims over the Kuril Islands still continue. However, it seems that the vast majority of Russians don’t want to cede the islands to Japan. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
