  2. Background • Born in South Korea. • Was adopted along with his sister when he was 8 yrs old. They moved to Hawaii. • He is Korean, but has spent little time there.

  3. How his career began… • Soentpiet first used watercolors when he was 16 in a high school art class. • His teacher was so impressed she sent his work to art schools around the country. • He won a scholarship to Pratt Institute in NYC where he studied Fine Arts and Education. • Ted and Betsy Lewin encouraged Chris to try illustrating. • After being rejected 10 times he eventually had the opportunity to write and illustrate his 1st children’s book Around Town.

  4. Experiences/Research • When doing research for his book Peacebound Trains he was able to visit his Korean siblings for the first time. • Chris does a lot of research about characters and settings because his books reflect people, history, and cultures.

  5. Chris Soentpiet’s work • His illustrations are historically and culturally accurate. • He uses models (along with costumes, makeup, and hair) to paint realistic illustrations. • Soentpiet takes pictures of the models acting out scenes to help him as he paints.

Realistic • Characters and settings look real • Soentpiet takes pictures of models and researches settings before he begins illustrating. • He paints with watercolors and uses his research and pictures to help his illustrations come to life. • Chris Soentpiet’s work stands out because his illustrations are so realistic.

  10. Brothers • I chose Brothers because the characters’ facial expressions on each page look so realistic. Even though it is just a painting you can tell what the character is feeling. • The realistic paintings of this book illustrate Soentpiet’s body of works.

Brothers (cont.) • This book celebrates diversity because a boy from China becomes friends with an Irish boy in San Francisco during a time when cultures did not really mix. • It would appeal to children because the 2 main characters are young boys who become friends. • It can be used to teach about immigration, different cultures, geography, the potatoe famine
