Expanding the Military • Army chief of staff General George Marshall pushed for the formation of a Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps. • The Legislation gave the WAAC an official status and salary but few of the benefits granted to male soldiers. • In July, 1943 after thousands of women had enlisted, they were granted full Army benefits under nurses, electricians, and more, but no combat allowed.
The Industrial Response • Fast pace building of army equipment • Manufactures were changing their companies around to make military goods • Henry J. kaiser was know as one of the fastest ship builders .(hall 440 was built in four days
Labor’s Contribution • 6 million women worked during WWII • Women make only 60% as much as men • Some defense contractors refused to hire African Americans
Mobilization Of Scientists • FDR created the office of scientific research and development (OSRD) • The OSRD achieved the secret development of a new weapon, the atomic bomb • The Manhattan Project became the code name for research work that extended across the country
Economic Controls • Roosevelt created the Office of Price Administration (OPA). • OPA fought inflation by freezing prices on most goods. • War Production Board (WPB) decided which companies would convert from peace time to war time production and allowed raw materials to key industries.
Rationing • Rationing-fixed allotments of goods deemed essential for the military • Most made due with the coupon books- set limits on what they could get each month • Some could not deal with the shortages so they hoarded or bought things on the Black Market.
