  2. DO NOW QUESTIONS 1. Which organelle is made up of transportation channels, and what city structure might it be compared to? 2. Which organelle is responsible for removing waste from the cell, and what city structure might it be compared to? 3. Which organelle synthesizes (creates) proteins, and what city structure might it be compared to? 4. Which organelle packages and modifies proteins, and what city structure might it be compared to? 5. Which organelle manufactures ENERGY for cells?

  3. Connections… • How do you say “to breathe” in Spanish?

  4. Connections… • Respirar! Which is related to the process of “cellular respiration.” • What other connections can we make to this process?

  5. THINK, PAIR, SHARE • As animals, where do we get our energy from? • How is this different than the way plants get their energy?

  6. Getting Energy… • BIG PIECES of food digested into tiny nutrients • Nutrients absorbed into the bloodstream in the small intestine

  7. Glucose • Simple form of sugar/carbohydrates • The basic fuel of the body • Absorbed through villi into the blood stream, where it goes as “food” to ALL body cells

  8. A Puzzle • But once glucose goes to cells, there’s a problem… • How do cells take GLUCOSE and make ENERGY?

  9. A Model • JAR = One Cell in the Body (it doesn’t matter which one!) • PAPER = Glucose • FIRE = Energy • How can the cell (JAR) create energy (FIRE) from glucose (PAPER)?

  10. Cellular Respiration • Cellular respiration: the process cells use to make energy from glucose Glucose + Oxygen  Carbon Dioxide + Water + ENERGY C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H20 + ATP • WHAT IS ATP????

  11. ATP IS ENERGY FOR CELLS! ATP = ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE

  12. ORDER THE EVENTS! Voices/Movement: “Restaurant voices,” sitting still. Instructions: The cards at your table parts of the cellular respiration process. PUT THEM IN ORDERR!!!!

  13. DIAGRAM THE TEXT • Voices/Movement: Silent and Sitting Still • Instructions: Using your notes, take five minutes to create your own diagram of cellular respiration (look on the backside of your notes).

  14. Cellular Respiration needs OXYGEN, so it is also called AEROBIC RESPIRATION! When energy is burned without OXYGEN, it is called ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION, also known as FERMENTATION!

  15. LAB ACTIVITY • Voices/Movement: You can use restaurant voices and move around the classroom. • Instructions: Follow the instructions on your lab sheet!
