  2. Requirement 1: Board Policy • 1-A. See Board Policy IGDJ • 1-B. See Board Policy IGDJ • 1-C. The school administration supports our sportsmanship policy by placing banners in the gymnasium that remind all in attendance that sportsmanlike behavior is expected by all. Also, by making regular announcements at sporting events that address administrative expectations and consequences to those who choose to not exhibit sportsmanlike behavior. Lastly, the administration supports the policy by making sportsmanship and the recognition of such behavior, an integral part of the senior awards ceremony, which is held each spring. • Continued on next slide

This group is comprised of ALL head coaches, coaches are given special tasks to actively work on (i.e. handbook issues, sportsmanship ideas, parent/booster issues) -Senior Awards Breakfast: An awards ceremony held at Wagner’s toward the end of the school year that honors some of the exceptional senior athletes that encourage sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity. B. Students and faculty are not required to attend any of the meetings but attendance is highly encouraged

The most recent presentation, the Senior Awards Breakfast, was attended by students, faculty, administration, members of the Board of Education, community members, and representatives from the local media. E. Materials are provided at all of these meetings. F. Presentations were not evaluated for their effectiveness this year, but a procedure for obtaining feedback is being developed.

  8. Requirement 4: Ongoing Campaign A. During the past school year we have emphasized the publicity of the North Ridgeville High School S.E.I. Committee through sportsmanship T-shirts, banners, reminders in the football program, and an announcement read before every sporting event.

  9. Requirement 4: Ongoing Campaign B. In order to intentionally raise awareness of the importance of sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity, the SEI Committee assisted in OHSAA events such as: • Volley for the Cure • OHSAA Foundation Basketball game Both events have a duel purpose of providing financial assistance for both foundations as well as allowing our students to participate in something much more valuable than just a game, community service. At the OHSAA game, goods, time, and money were also donated by all teams involved and given to the local Community Care.

  10. Requirement 4: Ongoing Campaign B. (cont.) Another example included our students’ reaction to the tragic car accident that killed two Midview High School students just before our annual rivalry football game. Without any direction or guidance, the student body made a banner of sympathy to mourn the loss of those students are presented it to Midview at the game on Friday night. Their actions appeared in the local news and newspapers (see picture). Needless to say, this was a very proud moment for our community and only reinforced the importance of our dedication to the SEI campaign.

  11. Requirement 4: Ongoing Campaign • The North Ridgeville High School S.E.I. Committee members are responsible for the planning and execution of the previously mentioned events. • The targets of our S.E.I. campaign include athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty, support groups, fans, parents, student organizations, and community members. We believe that sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity should be learned, practiced, and portrayed at every school sponsored event, as well as any community events.

  12. Requirement 5: Coaches Evaluations • Coaches use a post season check out packet to close the season and tie up any loose ends there may be. • The following slides are examples of the documents included in the check out packet. • You will see the page which appears in the packet, followed by a brief explanation of each.

  13. To the left, is the letter which every coach receives from our athletic director outlining what check out entails and what needs to be turned in. As you can see, it is pretty fool proof and walks the coach step by step through it while setting a deadline so all documents can come together in a timely fashion

  14. Step 1 of checkout • The coach sets a specific time with the athletic director • Coaches, in a first come first serve manner, sign up for time slots which fit their schedule • In this meeting, the coach presents their post season packet – completed – to the athletic director.

  15. Step 2 of Checkout • These documents deal with student awards • The awards banquet for each sport must be documented and turned into the athletic director • Varsity and Junior Varsity letters earned must be recorded by the coach • Special awards/conference awards order forms are turned in at this time as well • The following are the official documents used by the athletic department to keep track of these such things.

  16. The coach must provide the information for their end of the season awards program or banquet The athletic department will provide some deserts and refreshments for this. This section helps the coach prepare for the banquet and provides a guideline for them to cover to ensure success

  17. This item keeps track of student awards and letters. This document ranges from 7th grade to varsity participation This document allows coaches to track players over multiple seasons and eliminates error during award presentations

  18. This form allows coaches to nominate and recognize their athletes for special awards or note is they have received county or state recognition. Coaches can also nominate students who have helped the team succeed be it statistic managers or videographers

  19. Step 3 of Checkout • Step 3 of checkout is split into 3 sections • The first section deals with end of season summaries • These summaries include: season summary, inventory summary, outstanding inventory, and uniform inventory. • The second section deals with future needs • These include equipment needs, uniform needs, and next seasons schedule. • The third section deals with evaluations • These include coaching staff evaluations and head coach self-evaluation.

  20. Coaches keep track of their record, team accomplishments and individual accomplishments here. This allows for easy end of the year book keeping and easier acknowledgements.

  21. Inventories Section Uniform Inventory- to make sure all athletes have turned in uniforms and all are accounted for Outstanding Equipment – Keeps track of uniforms and equipment checked out and not returned Equipment Inventory – Used to keep track of all equipment from start to end of seasons

  22. Future Needs Section Equipment Needs – a coaches request for new equipment for the next season A record of the schedule for next season includes location, time, level, and contract terms Uniform Needs – a coaches request for improvements in uniforms or needs in this area.

  23. Evaluations Section This is the self performance evaluation given to coaches to complete by the athletic director. It is 3 pages and must be included in the close out packet. * The evaluation is also given to the assistant coaches by their head coach and the results are discussed internally

  24. Section 5 – B. Evaluations • Evaluations are performed by the Athletic Director, Nori Okuma at the conclusion of the season. • Mr. Okuma uses the evaluation sheet from the previous slide to measure the effectiveness and integrity of the coach following the season. • All evaluations are the same for each coach as to remain partial.

  25. Section 5 – C. Sportsmanship • Every year there is a preseason coaches meeting. At this meeting, coaches are encouraged to promote sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity. • Coaches are given an overview of changes to the athletic handbook and also of any policy changes. • The rules, expectations, and climate of the athletic department district wide is reviewed and made clear by the athletic director and other administrators.

  26. Section 5 – C. Cont. To the left, is a sportsmanship survey available at athletic events for those who attend to rate the sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity of our athletes, coaches, and fans. This is a good tool to help the district gauge and adjust the way things are going.

  27. Section 5-D. Our Athletic Handbook • Our handbook is reviewed and approved each year by the board of education. • The handbook outlines the rules, goals, and regulations of the North Ridgeville City Schools Athletic Department as a reflection of the goals of the district and OSHAA. • Click on the book to view a copy of the NRCS athletic handbook.

  28. Section 5 – F. Sportsmanship Examples Email from a parent of a visiting team regarding our MS wrestling tournament.

  29. Requirement 6: The Complaint Department • There is a written procedure in place for receiving, investigating, and acting upon complaints regarding sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity. • It is also encouraged that if a complaint arises, one could e-mail the athletic director directly and the proper actions could be taken from them per the athletic handbook. • On the next slide, you will see an example of the form available to all attendees of athletic events to report on sportsmanship and ethics.

  30. To the left, is a sportsmanship survey available at athletic events for those who attend to rate the sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity of our athletes, coaches, and fans. This is a good tool to help the district gauge and adjust the way things are going.

  31. Section 6 – B. Handling the Complaint • In North Ridgeville, we believe in a personal touch when dealing with complaints which involve sportsmanship – ethics – and/or integrity. • Specifically if there is a complaint, they will be directed to contact the athletic office directly, by phone or e-mail, to speak with the athletic director personally. OR

  32. Section 6 – C. After a Complaint • The plan for dealing with complaints is implemented at two levels • The Athletic Director – handles the initial complaint. • The Sportsmanship and Ethics Council made up of administrators, athletes, and teachers– takes the complaint and then deals with it as a whole with the vision and practices of the district at the heart of that decision.

  33. Part 7: Critical Situations • Our school’s procedure for handling heated rivalries, overflow crowds and unruly spectators. • 7-A. Currently, there is no written plan. There is however, an announcement read before each sporting event that outlines the expectations of all in attendance and the consequences if those expectations are not met.

  34. Part 7: Critical Situations Cont. • 7-B. High school administrative team is responsible for implementing any plans that are produced. • 7-C. The high school administrative team is responsible for being prepared for potentially difficult crowds and implementing a plan to deal with situations as they arise.

  35. Part 7: Critical Situations Cont. • 7-D. Last season the student section in our gym was located directly outside the visitor’s locker room and directly across from the visitors’ student section. This created the potential for negative behavior from both our fans, the players from other teams, and visiting fans. This season the administration decided to move the student section so that it would be on the opposite end of the floor from the visiting locker room and the visiting student section. • During our football games we hire police 4 officers to assist in crowd control. For the game against our rival Midview, we hired 6 officers to assist with crowd control in the stadium as well as in the parking lot.

  36. Part 8: Awards Program • Our school has an awards program established to recognize outstanding sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. • As part of the West Shore Conference each sport recognizes an athlete for their display of sportsmanship on the field of play. The WSC Sportsmanship award is recommended by the coach and approved by the Athletic Director and Principal of each school. • Sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity are recognized by North Ridgeville High School’s administration and Board of Education during the Senior Awards Breakfast. The Board of Education recognizes the efforts of Conference championship teams at Board meetings as well.

  37. Part 8: Awards Program • • This year our SEI Committee created a program that we began using to recognize students for their outstanding displays of sportsmanship. Students are nominated by teachers, faculty, and staff. The SEI Committee has established a subcommittee to review the nominations and vote to determine the winners. • Winners are recognized at a sporting event and awarded a “Sportsmanship t-shirt”.
