Activity Two: Civil War and the Invasion of Korea and Manchuria, 1500–1603 • In the twelfth century, with imperial unity dissolved, Japan came under the control of a number of regional warlords called daimyo. • Warfare among the daimyo was common, and in 1592 the most powerful of these warlords, Hideyoshi, chose to lead an invasion of Korea. • Although the Korean and Japanese languages are closely related, the dominant influence on Yi dynasty Korea was China. • Koreans and their Chinese allies were defeated by the Japanese. • After Hideyoshi's death in 1598, the Japanese withdrew their forces and, in 1606, made peace with Korea. • The Japanese withdrawal left Korea in disarray and the Manchu in a greatly strengthened position. …this leads us to the Tokugawa Shogunate, 1603–1800

  19. Activity Three: Get into your groups of 4. Read your assigned document packet and answer the discussion questions. Then, on a piece of chart paper, complete a detailed SOAPSTone of the documents. Below your SOAPSTone, write a 1-2 sentence summary of the major ideas that the document presents.

  20. Activity ONE: Gallery Walk In your groups, walk around and observe the chart paper. As you walk around, take detailed notes on each document. Consider the following questions: • What information does this document give me about the Tokugawa period? • How did Tokugawa leadership differ from other societies?

What did you find easy? • Activity One: Form groups of four. Review your answers within your groups. Discuss what it was about the question that prevented you from answering correctly. Try to come to a consensus. • Activity Two: Jigsaw into a new group. Compare your answers with that group. Come to a consensus. • Activity Three: Write a paragraph answering this question • What kind of questions were you most often confused by? What can you do to more effectively prepare for the retest?
