  4. Surgical Portfolio 1/2 • Needs to include (at a minimum) - CV - Certificates - Surgical Logbook - Student/Foundation Logbook - Letters of support - Audit

  5. Surgical Portfolio 2/2 • Continued- - Research and publications - Teaching - Reflective Diary • Other things to consider - Presentations given - SSM/Elective reports

  7. Surgical CV 1/5 • Name, DOB (Age), Sex, Contact Details • Qualifications (A Levels and beyond) • Memberships to professional bodies - RCSEng/RCSEd/JASME/ASGBI - BMA/MPS less important • Employment history

  8. Surgical CV 2/5 • OOPEs (out of programme experience) - SSMs ideally in surgery, or relevant subject (e.g. critical care) - Summer placements - Elective • Research and Publications - ‘Publish or perish’ - Still important

  9. Surgical CV 3/5 • Audit - Compulsory - Choose something worthwhile • Teaching - Informal (ad hoc ward based) - Formal (prescribed, learning plan, presentation, feedback)

  10. Surgical CV 4/5 • Management - Not immediately relevant, but one of the roles of a surgeon, necessary to embrace • Letters to learned journals - Carry CV points, not as important as research - Must be peer reviewed, many available on internet

  11. Surgical CV 5/5 • Awards received - Med school prizes, presentation prizes, awards from other organisations • Courses attended - Lots available, advertised in sBMJ, many on the internet, observe on some courses if necessary • Extra-curricular activities

Surgical Logbook 2/2 • You need to record - interesting patients/cases - acute surgical patients seen - outpatient clinics attended - procedures performed (CVP lines, art lines, cystoscopy etc) - surgical procedures observed/assisted/performed - time spent in simulators - anything to prove attainment of competencies

Making the most of your attachments in surgery • Turn up to as many ward rounds, theatre sessions and clinics as you can • Spend time shadowing the F1 • Clerk all new patients and present them • Get involved in the ward round, know the patients! • Keep a log book of all practical procedures, interesting cases and sessions attended

  17. Some Top Tips! • Start building up your portfolio now • Observe or attend some surgical courses • Get involved in teaching and management • Give presentations • Get a good set of SSMs and elective in a relevant specialty

  18. Some Top Tips! • Decide on your career early on, and demonstrate longevity of interest • Badger people to get you involved in audit and or research • Read journals online and keep up to date • Attend College student activities • Seek and apply for prizes and scholarships
