Kent State Tragedy Rosalie DiRienzo, Abigail Hunt
Background Information • May 4th, 1970 • Kent State College, Ohio • Protest on college campus
Nature of Conflict • Students gathered for an anti-war rally at noon on the commons, a large grassy area in the middle of the campus. • National Guard was called in to attempt to stop the protest.
500 core student demonstrators, 1000 people cheering on the protestors and 1500 spectators. • Across from the commons were 100 Ohio Nation Guardsmen. • Police officers attempted to end the protest.
Soldiers fired tear gas into the crowd, students moved out of the commons near the Victory Bell and onto Blanket Hill, and into the parking lot. • Students screamed at the soldiers and threw rocks at them.
At this time the soldiers weapons were loaded but no shots were fired. • When the students refused to leave the guards shot into the crowd.
Four students were killed and nine others were wounded. • As a result of the tragedy college campuses all over the country were shut down and students were sent home.
