  1. Optical Phenomena Darren Hedlund Mrs. Grayot, Physics, 6 Chapter 13, Section 3 02-26-09

  2. Total Internal Reflection • Total internal refraction can occur when light moves along a path from a medium of high index of refraction to one with a lower index of refraction • High index is more dense • Low index is less dense • Fiber Optics

  3. Critical Angle/Formula • Snell’s Law = sinØ1/sinØ2 • V1/v2=n2/n1 • sin (critical angle) = index of refraction of second medium/index of refraction of first medium

  4. Atmospheric Refraction • Deviation of light or electromagnetic wave from a straight line as it passes through the atmosphere due to the variation in air density as a function of altitude • Mirages- a phenomenon that nature produces by refraction in the atmosphere. Different layers of air at different temperatures have different refractive properties.

  5. Dispersion • Dispersion- Process of separating polychromatic light into its component wavelengths. • Rainbows-created by dispersion through water droplets • Prism- white light passes through prism, the blue light gets bent more than the red one and so on with the rest of the colors, resulting in a rainbow or the visible spectrum

  6. Lens Aberrations • Spherical aberration- When a spherical lens’ rays do not line up with the axis, resulting in a distorted image • Chromatic aberration- Caused when a diverging or converging bens the natural colors of an object, resulting in another distorted image • Focal Points- The point of the object the lens is being focused on • Axis- The converging point of the rays • Rays- The angles of contact that help create the image from the lens • People with astigmatism experience lens aberrations
