  2. Death • Thanatology – the study of dying and death

  3. Stages of Death • Denial (1st Stage)- the person is shocked or numb to the news. • They will then question their diagnosis “The Dr. doesn’t know what he/she is talking about” • This is important – the person can move to the next stage or completely deny what’s happening and continue to live their life without treatment

  4. Stages of Death • Anger (2nd Stage) – the person is angry about the news, their fate, people in their life & the powers that allowed it to happen (God) • Usually alienate themselves and no one can help them

  5. Stages of Death • Bargaining (3rd Stage) – they accept their fate and begin trying to find ways to get more time • Ask God for more time • Change of ways

  6. Stages of Death • Depression (4th Stages) – they are depressed about the loss to come (loss everybody & everything) • How would you help someone going through this?

  7. Stages of Death • Accept (5th Stage) – They accept their fate and are calm about it. • They will start to become detached to make death easier on them and their family

  8. Exceptions • Not all people go through all of the stages • Some people may stay at one stage or repeat certain stages over

  9. Death Today • Modern medicines and advancements have made the average life span 78. • It is now common for people to die in nursing homes and hospitals

  10. Hospice • Hospice- A place where terminally ill people go to die • The goal is to make the patient surrounding pleasant and comfortable during a difficult time. • Not prolonging life but to improve the quality
