Japan Earthquake • 11 March 2011, 8.9-magnitude quake caused 13-15 ft tsunami. • Almost 90,000 homes, 4,000 roads and over 70 bridges were destroyed. • ShelterBox was one of the first aid agencies to respond • SRT on the ground within 24 hours to assess need • 1,680 ShelterBoxesdeployed to the area. Horn of Africa Drought • In July 2011, drought, famine & conflict swept across East Africa. • UN figures: over 860,000 Somali refugees in region. • Thousands of refugees arrived in camps in Ethiopia & Kenya. • SRTs travelled to both countries to assess need for shelter. • Nearly 8,000ShelterBox tents distributed, housing nearly 8,000families. • Largest distribution of ShelterBox aid to one disaster in 2011.
