  2. Back to School Night Welcome to Independent Research Class! Ms. Curtin

  3. Independent ResearchMs. Curtin Course Description: College-level Students design an original research study Students will study with a professional advisor in a self-selected area of interest Student research focuses on contributing new knowledge to the field of study

  4. Independent Research Teacher’s Roles: Facilitates classroom instruction Facilitates advisor contacts Instructs advanced-level research methodologies Instructs college-level writing and oral presentation skills.

  5. Academic Integrity Honesty: The Howard High School’s honor code will be rigorously enforced. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade. All borrowed words, ideas, and sentence structure must be documented appropriately and accurately.

  6. PERSIST with PRIDE Howard High’s theme correlates with this course well. A cumulative, year-long research study demands persistence. “Ambition is the path to success, persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” -William Eardley IV

  7. Grading/Assignments Every quarter students will receive a syllabus – “Grades and Assignments” sheet. Students should pay close attention to all due dates and refer to the rubrics and assignment directions before turning in all assignments. Students are responsible for checking the assignment sheet and submitting assignments without prompting. (It’s on my website if it gets lost).

  8. Aspen • Grades will be published on HCPSS Aspen website. • It is the student’s responsibility to check his/her account for missing work and averages. • CODES: • MI: Missing (absent, make-up work, etc.) • Ex: Excused • 0: Zero (actual score, failed to submit, etc.)

  9. Independence Most of the student’s time will be spent working independently. This is a large responsibility and is not to be taken lightly. A portion of his/her grade will depend on how well he/she works independently and how well he/she demonstrates qualities of an independent worker. Qualities: time wisely, maintaining organization, managing your assignment deadlines and demonstrating initiative.

  10. TURNITIN.COM This is an addendum to the syllabus. Students are expected to submit all assignments via turnitin.com by midnight on the due date; unless otherwise specified. Students have been provided details via e-mail and orally in class. LATE WORK is not accepted!

  21. A Few Procedures: Students must leave the building at 1:15, signing out at the attendance window, unless they are attending my class. Staying in the building without my supervision will result in a discipline referral for cutting class. There are weekly/bi-weekly mandatory seminars; students have the dates. Students need to call mentors immediately if they will not be able to attend a scheduled time on site. They should also call and/or email me immediately.
