About the Military • The United States Armed Forces: • The military forces of the United States (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps & Navy) • The President of the U.S.: • The overall head of the military • Helps form military policy • The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD): • A federal executive department • The principal organ by which military policy is carried out • Headed by the Secretary of Defense • a civilian & a member of the cabinet • serves as the President’s second-in-command D R A F T
