  2. Before The Israelites Choose a King • Around 1000 B.C., the strongest people living in Canaan were the Philistines • The Israelites began to worship their gods • The 12 tribes constantly quarreled • To unite against the powerful Philistines, they needed a king

  3. Before The Rule of King Saul • Despite his warnings, Samuel the prophet did as the people wanted and chose a king (Saul) • He defeated many of the Israelite enemies • Saul displeased God by disobeying Him and God instructed Samuel to choose a new king

  4. Before The Rule of King David • Warrior who defeated the giant Goliath at a young age • David took the throne after the death of Saul • He drove out the Philistines and established an empire • Israelites payed high taxes to expand the capital and build the temple • David died before the temple building

  5. Before The Rule of King Solomon • He built the temple, the center of the Jewish religion • Known for his wisdom and proverbs • At his death, 10 of the 12 tribes rebelled and formed a new country • North: Israel with Samaria as the capital • South: Judah with Jerusalem as the capital
