  1. Tips for Students Who Wish to Live in Off-Campus Housing

  2. Living off campus is cheaper, gives you more freedom, and allows you to pick your roommates. However, off-campus housing still comes with its share of challenges.

  3. You’ll be responsible for paying rent and bills, which may mean coordinating with roommates to make sure that everyone contributes a fair share.

  4. There’s also the difficulty of finding suitable rooms for rent in Oshawa; students tend to all be looking at the same time, which means you need to act fast to secure the perfect place.

  5. 1. Start Your Search Early Avoid leaving your search for accommodation to the last minute. What is left will likely be what other students rejected for reasons like distance from campus, price, and negative qualities.

  6. 2. Get Roommates Onboard Decide who you want to live with and bring them along on your search for housing. Pick people who have similar study and living styles. Make sure you set out terms as to how much each person will pay and how you will divide utility bills, food, and essentials. If you don’t know anyone yet or are unsure about asking friends to join you, consider subletting an apartment to save money.

  7. 3. Ask Your School for Advice As there is limited availability on campus, schools tend to have off-campus housing services to help students find ideal accommodation. At a minimum, this should involve showing you where to find listings and giving you pointers about what to look for in a lease.

  8. 4. Look for Student-Friendly Landlords Landlords who advertise as having accommodation just for students may offer lower rent, allow you to sign a contract for less than a full year, and include utilities in the price. Usually, the housing is close to campus or connected to public transport that will take you right to school.

  9. Bear in mind, though, that even student-friendly apartments are subject to strict contracts. For instance, you’ll be unable to break the lease halfway through its term if you decide to put school on hold or move elsewhere. Make your life easier by choosing Durham College housing designed specifically for students. At a place like Village Suites Oshawa, you pay your own lease each month.

  10. Each person has an individual contract, meaning you have no need to worry about your roommates paying their share. Plus, we can match you with roommates who have similar personalities and interests to you, meaning there’s no need to find friends to share with.
