  1. RISE OF CHRISTIANITY AND DECLINE OF ROME

  2. RISE OF CHRISTIANITY • AD 6: Judea becomes a Roman province. Jews believe that a savior known as the Messiah would restore the kingdom of the Jews. • 6-4 BC- Jesus of Nazareth is born in Bethlehem. • Age 30- Jesus begins public ministry. Preaches and teaches for 3 years. • Jesus’ message appeals especially to the poor (he ignores wealth and status completely)

  3. RISE OF CHRISTIANITY • As Jesus increases in popularity, he angers the Jewish high court (Sanhedrin). AD 29- Jesus enters Jerusalem and is greeted by many as the Messiah. • Jesus is arrested and eventually crucified. • According to the Gospels (main source of info about Jesus’ life), 3 days later Jesus is raised from the dead and appears to his apostles. Jesus is referred to as Jesus Christ because of the Greek word “christos” (savior). “Christian” was originally a derogatory term for followers of Jesus. • Christianity’s first followers are Jews. The Apostles, particularly Paul, are instrumental in spreading Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. Pax Romana helps. Why?

  4. RISE OF CHRISTIANITY • AD 66- Great Revolt. AD 70- Temple destroyed. Fall of Masada (Who were Sicarri?). • Jewish Diaspora • Christians will not worship Roman gods and are persecuted mercilessly. Nevertheless, Christianity expands rapidly. • p. 170 in your text- 5 theories on the growth of Christianity • AD 312- Constantine converts to Christianity and ends persecution. Theodosius makes Christianity the official religion of the Empire. • AD 325- Nicene Creed CONSTANTINE DIOCLETIAN

  5. RISE OF CHRISTIANITY • St. Augustine- St. Augustine

  6. FALL OF ROME • Pax Romana ends with Marcus Aurelius • Economic problems- inflation, declining agriculture, attacks • decline of military strength- mercenaries etc. • Diocletian restores order (but at what price?). Diocletian divides the empire and eventually retires. This causes civil war. • Constantine takes over and moves the capital to Byzantium (Constantinople) • AD 370- attack of the Huns leads to Germanic invasion. • AD 444- Attila unites Huns and wreaks havoc on the empire

  7. FALL OF ROME • last Roman emperor is a 14 year old named Romulus Augustulus; defeated by Germanic forces in 476. • Byzantine empire continues to flourish until 1453. • ***p. 174 in your text has a nice chart on the fall of the Roman Empire***
