  2. ~ Among Women in Florida ~ • Women accounted for 27% of AIDS cases in 1997. In 2006, that figure rose to 32%.

  4. Adult AIDS Cases and Case Rates per 100,000 People by Race and Ethnicity, Florida, 2005 This represents: • 1 in 83 African-American women • 1 in 553 Hispanic women • 1 in 1,625 white women

  5. Some Excellent News: HIV diagnosis rates among African-American women declined by an average of 10.2% per year from 1999 through 2004. This trend appears to have continued in 2005 and 2006.

Sisters Informing Sisters About Topics on AIDS (SISTA) • Open communication about sexual choices • The need for women to protect themselves from HIV and STDs through condom use • Ways to negotiate condom use with their male partners successfully • Addressing the challenges and joys of being an African-American woman

  7. Media Campaign Targets Minorities HIV/AIDS wemakethechange.com This interactive Web site targets a culturally diverse audience and has video clips, radio spots, prevention information, directions to the AIDS Hotline, and more.

  8. Ride the Bus Initiative • Another successful initiative involved outreach workers who rode city busses in Miami giving out free condoms and engaging people to talk about safer sex.

  10. Targeted Outreach for Pregnant Women Act (TOPWA) • Outreach-based program • In nine cities targeted to women of childbearing age at risk of HIV and substance abuse • TOPWA offers: • HIV and pregnancy testing • Linkage to needed services such as prenatal care or substance abuse treatment

  11. HIV Perinatal Education to the Medical Community • We estimate that there will be 1,100 infants born to HIV-infected moms in 2007. • AETC educates O.B. providers about the need for HIV/STD testing and treatment for pregnant women.
