General Comment SPD General Meeting - 19th Nov. 2008 Transition phase (Dec07) • The full system was moved from the DSF to P2 • Changes in the strategies to move forward an automatic system • Changes to match with the ALICE DCS constrains Robustness phase (May08) • Debug of the full system • New features requested to make it really operative and to check all the functionalities and performances • Improvement in the stabilities (PVSS, FSM, FED, hardware) Stabilizing phase • To make this system automatic, user friendly and manageable • A documented system

System status in DSF SPD General Meeting - 19th Nov. 2008 The system is needed in DSF • SPD off until May 2009 • For upgrades and test purpose • To test the sector spare (next year) Last PVSS projects was moved from P2 to DSF • Panels and libraries are cleaned (starting point) • The PVSS project configuration is on-going Hardware status is up to date (Petra) On-line and DAQ is up to date (Henrik)

New Features and Pending Issues (I) SPD General Meeting - 19th Nov. 2008 Read-out of MCM ADCs (tested in DSF) New tools to communicate with the construction DB and to access the data archived (see Claudio) Temperature Alarm synchronization with real settings (tested) New developments needed to be synchronized with the Routers error handler strategy • First discussion to define the software policy (FED, DPs, Alarms, Panels, DB) Improvement of Start of Run procedure (on-going) • Speed up the procedure (on-going) • Reset checks (to be checked) • Automatic setting depending on run Type (on-going)

New Features and Pending Issues (II) SPD General Meeting - 19th Nov. 2008 Cleaning panels and libraries (started) • Removed all the old code in the projects installed in DSF • Started to better comment to new code • Starting to use Doxygen in PVSS to nicer documentation (already used in FED) User friendly panels with user rights (started) • Claudio started to think about it using the ALICE DCS police (based on nice rights) The main PIT panel could be accessible from the SPD UI to reduce the remote desktop connections (easy to do if agreed) General LHC information is public in ALICE DCS DPs as beam infos (TDI, TED status), magnet condition, etc.

New Features and Pending Issues (III) SPD General Meeting - 19th Nov. 2008 SPD DAs and automatic noisy pixel mask • DAs => DAQ FXS (done) • DAQ FXS => DCS CDB (Automatic storage infos in construction DB temporary table) Possible changes will be needed in the FSM structure (first DCS-ECS discussion, not yet agreed) • Main FSM State renaming to be synchronized with ALICE • DCS-ECS Configuration policy is under investigation • Minor bugs are still in the services that could be fixed Documentation on the web with procedures for the typical scenarios (Power-on, Power-off, how to exclude one channel, how to save a version on the DB etc.)

  10. Summary SPD General Meeting - 19th Nov. 2008 DSF will be used to test the new features keeping the system ready to test the sector spare New developments are needed to match with the Router error handling policy All the effort is now oriented to make the system automatic and user friendly
