  2. Terms • Cattle or Bovine: pertaining to cows • Swine: pertaining to pigs • Poultry: pertaining to chickens, turkeys etc • Equestrian: pertaining to horses

  3. Terms • Purebred: an animal of recognized breed that is eligible for registration in the official herd book of breeds • Grade: any animal not of a purebred or eligible for registration, that possesses the major characteristics of a breed • Litter: pigs farrowed by a sow at one time • Castrate: to remove sex organs from a male

  4. Cattle • Bovine: Of or pertaining to: Bulls, Cows, Calves, etc.

  5. Male Cattle • Not Castrated: Bull • Castrated at Young Age: Steer • Castrated at Older Age: Stag

  6. Female Cattle • Female who gave birth: Cow • Female who hasn’t birthed: Heifer • Baby: Calf

  7. Swine • Swine: Of or pertaining to pigs, sows, boars, etc • Farrow: a litter of pigs

  8. Swine Males • Not Castrated male: Boar • Castrated older Male: Stag • Castrated younger male: Barrow

  9. Female Swine • Female who has given birth: Sow • Female who has not birthed: Gilt • Baby: Pig

  10. Equestrian • Equestrian: of or pertaining to horses

  11. Male Equestrian • Not Castrated Male: Stallion • Not Castrated Young: Colt • Castrated: Gelding

  12. Female Equestrian • Female: Mare • Young Female: Filly • Baby: Foal

  13. More Equestrian • Jack: Male donkey • Jennet: Female donkey • Mule: Cross between Jack and Mare • Hinny: Female offspring of Jack and Mare

  14. Poultry • Of or Pertaining to chickens, turkeys, ducks, etc

  15. Male Poultry • Rooster: Male un-castrated chicken • Tom: Male un-castrated turkey • Capon: Male castrated chicken before secondary sex characteristics develop

  16. Female Poultry • Hen: Older females of poultry • Pullets: Young female chickens before maturity

  17. Sheep, Goats, etc. • Ram: Male of sheep • Ewe: Female of Sheep • Lamb: Offspring of Sheep

  18. Sheep, Goats, Etc. • Buck: Male goat • Does: Female goat • Kid: offspring
