  3. Map Types • Topographic – most commonly used by KSAR • TRIM Maps • Search Status Map • Orthophotos • Air photos • Tourist/trail maps • Backroads map book • Forestry maps

  4. Topographic Maps • Scales of 1:250 000 and 1:50 000 • Most often used by KSAR • Produced by Natural Resources Canada conforming to National Topographic System – NTS • Identified by unique map names and numbers • Wealth of information

  7. Map Scales • Scale refers to the relationship between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground • 1:50 000 – 1cm on the map equals 50 000cms on the ground • 50 000cm = 500m = 0.5km • UTM Grid Lines spaced 2cm = 1km

UTM Grid • More commonly used by SAR groups and recreational map users • Uses the crossing of a north-south grid line and an east-west grid line to describe a location • Easting is always given first and the northing coordinate second • In the door (Easting) and up the stairs (Northing) • Specify NAD27 or NAD83 when giving coordinates

  9. NAD27 and NAD83 • Grid Coordinates can differ by several hundred meters

  10. UTM Coordinates The coordinates for this knoll are 375136 St. Mary’s Lake or Easting 11U 537500 Northing 5513600

  11. Latitude and Longitude • Used by pilots and aircraft personnel • Measured in degrees, minutes and seconds • 116° 55’ 30” N – one hundred sixteen degrees, 55 minutes and 30 seconds North • 60 seconds = 1 minute • 60 minutes = 1 degree • Latitude given first, then longitude • Longitude decreases West to East • Estimate seconds to the nearest 5” or 1/12th of a minute

  12. Lat/Long Coordinates • The coordinates for this knoll are 49° 46’ 30” N 116° 28’ 45” W

Topo Map Colors • Black – buildings, railways, power lines, co-ordinates, precise elevations, border information • Red – paved roads, highway #’s,urban developments • Orange – unpaved roads, unclassified roads and streets • Brown – contour lines, contour elevations, spot elevations, sand • Blue – water, ice, UTM grid info • Grey – back of map legend • Green – wooded areas (platoon of troops)

Contour Lines • Connect points of equal elevation • Contour intervals 25m or 100ft • Gentle slope: wide spacing (picture 5) • Steep slope: lines are close together (picture 4) • Peak: circle (picture 1) • Valleys: V points to a higher elevation • Ridges: V points to a lower elevation • Direction of flow in rivers: V always points upstream

  16. Map Handling • Handle maps carefully! • Use map cases in the field or photocopies • Keep dry • Fold properly • Leave folded when possible
