Phase I and Phase II Studies • To begin: • All proposals must be related to the advancement of student learning in mathematics, science , or reading • All proposal must show their connectedness to the IERI goal of scaling up • All proposals must map well to the benchmarks • Proposals cannot exceed budget requirements and expect to be reviewed

  3. PHASE I STUDIES • We anticipate more Phase I applicants in mathematics, science, and reading comprehension • Phase I proposals are limited to $1million over a period not to exceed 24 months • You need to identify that you are applying for a Phase I award

  4. PHASE I STUDIES • Feasibility Studies • For the study of critical implementation factors • To refine methodologies (including measures) with broader populations • Replication Studies To generate a broader inferential base to support a treatments effect • Instrumentation Studies • Develop measures in support of a scaling study

  5. PHASE I STUDIES • Phase I studies must show that if funded they would lead to a competitive proposal for a Phase II study • For example, funding will not be made available for a psychometric study if the PI cannot show how the development of these new measures helps fill the final gap in the PI’s plan to bring a proposed treatment to scale

PHASE II STUDIES • Again: • Proposals must be related to the advancement of student learning in mathematics, science , or reading • Proposal must show their connectedness to the IERI goal of scaling up • Proposals must map well to the benchmarks • Proposals cannot exceed budget requirements and expect to be reviewed

  7. PHASE II STUDIES • Phase II research • Identifies and tests a treatment and the conditions for taking said treatment to sale • Must be ready to go to scale, and • Must meet the theoretical, methodological, and interdisciplinarity requirements, along with having a solid technological underpinning • Must not cost more than $6 million over a period of up to five years
