  2. Hyperparathyroidism- Hypersecretion in which the parathyroid glands produce too much PTH Important terms Parathyroid Glands- Four glands in the neck that release PTH Paget’s Disease of Bone- a chronic condition that causes abnormal bone growth Osteoporosis- Progressive disease that causes bones to become thin and brittle

  3. Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) PTH controls calcium and phosphorus levels in blood so you can grow to be strong- Like Super Man! PTH is made by the parathyroid glands. Kidneys and the intestines are targeted by PTH

  4. If blood calcium levels are too low, the parathyroid gland releases PTH. This causes the bones to release more calcium into the blood & reduces the amount of calcium released by the kidneys into the urine In hyperparathyroidism, the amount of calcium in the blood increases. Some symptoms of hyperparathyroidism include constipation, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Hyperparathyroidism may lead to kidney stones and osteoporosis. The body removes calcium from the bones leading to… Parathyroid Hormone If needed, the parathyroid glands may be removed.

  5. Parathyroid Hormone Tests PTH tests are conducted to: Help identify hyperparathyroidism Find the cause of an abnormal blood calcium level Check to see whether the parathyroid glands are causing the abnormal blood calcium level Watch for problems in people who have chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease- progressive loss of renal function over a period of time.

  6. Calcitonin Calcitonin is a hormone used to decrease bone destruction caused by cancer. It is also used as a pain reliever for bone and nerve pain. Calcitonin is given either by a shot or by a nasal spray. Side affects of taking calcitonin include: -Swelling of injection site -Nausea and vomiting -Decreased appetite -Stomach pain -Weakness -Headaches Hypersecretion of calcitonin occurs during an overdose. Hypersecretion may cause nose bleeds, swelling, trouble breathing, and/or hives Calcitonin is used against osteoporosis and Paget’s disease of bone Call 911 if you experience these symptoms!!

  7. Calcitriol is injected. Hypersecretion is caused by an overdose. Hypersecretion may lead to weakness, headaches, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and dizziness. Calcitriol Calcitriol is a form of vitamin D used to treat and prevent low levels of calcium in the blood of patients whose kidneys or parathyroid glands are not functioning normally Please contact a poison control center immediately if an overdose occurs Like calcitonin, calcitriol is used against osteoporosis. Calcitriol is not recommended as a first-line treatment for osteoporosis because it has not shown too much promise in studies compared to other treatments. It also requires periodic monitoring of calcium levels
