  1. WELCOME TO THE ARSENIC LEVEL 1 ONLINE TRAINING COURSE Lesson 2

  2. Arsenic is a byproduct of SOME AGRICULTURAL and INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES

  3. IT CAN ENTER DRINKING WATER THROUGH THE GROUND or AS RUNOFF INTO SURFACE WATERS

  4. SMELTING, REFINING and PROCESSING PLANTS are among the most important industrial activities able to release Arsenic

  5. 70% OF THE WORLD ARSENIC PRODUCTION IS USED IN TIMBER TREATMENTS as COPPER CHROME ARSENATE (CCA)

  6. 22% occurs in AGRICULTURAL CHEMICALS

  7. The remaining in GLASS, PHARMACEUTICALS and NON-FERROUS ALLOYS

  8. Also MINING and FOSSL FUELS BURNING are among the most important processes which can release Arsenic

  9. VERY IMPORTANT SOURCE OF POLLUTION are AGRICULTURAL FIELDS contaminated because of the use, in the past years, of ARSENIC CONTAINING PESTICIDES

  10. Please note the relevance of TAILINGS FROM / OR RIVER BOTTOMS LOCATED NEAR GOLD MINING AREAS

  11. Pay attention to the use of SOME COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS, ESPECIALLY ANIMAL FEED

  12. RICE IS THE CROP WITH THE HIGHEST CAPABILITY TO CONCENTRATE ARSENIC

  13. Arsenic is a NATURALLY OCCURRING ELEMENT, found in MORE THAN 200 MINERALS. The most relevant is the ARSENOPYRITE

  14. ABOUT ONE THIRD of AIR ARSENIC IS PRODUCED BY NATURAL SOURCES (VOLCANIC ACTION and VOLATILIZATION)

  15. ARSENIC IN DRINKING WATER IS MAINLY DUE TO NATURAL SOURCES

  16. It is so HARD ACT DIRECTLY ON SOURCES, especially on natural ones, but if we can raise awareness on population, we can achieve equally important goals

  17. We can AVOID THE CONTACT WITH CONTAMINATED WATER

  18. Under certain circumstances WE COULD ACT ON GROUNDWATERS (but it is not so likely)

  19. WE CAN ACT ON TAP WATER AT THE COMMUNITY LEVEL (this is STRONGLY RECOMMENED)

  20. LESS TOXIC ORGANIC ARSENIC COMPOUNDS can be found mainly on AQUATIC ORGANISMS

  21. Countries where most Arsenic can be found: ARGENTINA, BANGLADESH, CHILE, CHINA, INDIA, MEXICO and also USA

  22. From groundwater CONTAMINATION CAN SPREAD:CROPS IRRIGATED WITH CONTAMINATED WATER and FOOD PREPARED WITH CONTAMINATED WATER

  23. This is very important to STUDY LINES OF DISPERSION of Arsenic INTO THE EVIRONMENT
