  3. les nazis • When germany invaded paris in 1940, the french cut the lift cables so that the nazis would have to climb to the top of the tower to hang the swastika flag from the top. When allies of france neared paris, hitler demanded that the tower and the rest of the city be destroyed, but the orders were ignored.
