Weather vs. Climate • Weather is a description of the day-to-day changes in temperature, precipitation, cloud cover, wind speed and direction, and other atmospheric phenomena. (what’s the weather like today?) • Climate is the average of all the factors that contribute to weather, but calculated over many years. (I want to move south to Florida for its warmer climate)
Uneven Heating of Earth’s Surface • strong constant heating at Equator. • weak seasonal heating at Poles.
Coriolis Effect http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcPs_OdQOYU
Interactions Among Air, Water, and Land • lake effect snow in Michigan. • marine layer in California.
Effects of Elevation • Rain shadow • Lower temperature with elevation
Biomes A biome is a region described by a particular type of vegetation and caused by a particular climate (average temperature and precipitation).--temperate deciduous forest-- northern coniferous forest.-- prairie.-- desert.-- chaparral-- tundra-- tropical rain forest.
Aquatic Life Zones An aquatic life zone is the equivalent of a biome underwater, but is determined by the type of water (fresh or salt), depth, and presence of a bottom or of sunlight.
