Overview • Classroom Uses • Advantages / Benefits • Disadvantages • Operation • Software • Types and Styles of Interactive Whiteboards • Summary
Classroom Uses • Interactive whiteboards replace traditional whiteboards • They are used to operate different software or (in this case) educational programs • Used as a teaching resource or tool throughout lessons • Visual representation and • physical aid – demonstrates a computer desktop • Assists in learning • Allows students to be involved
Advantages/Benefits • Easy to use • Interactive and fun educational tool • Access to wide range of software programs, resources and aids • Custom operations • Applies to different learning styles – visual, audio, kinaesthetic, brain-based learners • Different styles and types of equipment, software and the boards themselves • Good for business meetings and group learning situations
Disadvantages • If problems or breakages occur the lesson would be interrupted as the whiteboard is the main focus • Can not use permanent markers as this may damage the board • Costs of establishment and maintenance
Operation • Whiteboard can be connected to a projector, computer, video recorder and/or DVD player • Can be wired through a USB port, or it can be wireless such as Bluetooth • It can control any computer application • Teaching and learning through visual representations and the whole class has access to a ‘computer’ at the same time. • Can be touch screen or used with certain markers and light equipment
Software • Different KLA’s – geography, mathematics, science, literacy • Easiteach - offers numerous resources for various subject areas. Can incorporate visual multimedia files. It includes all the tools that you need to create interactive lessons. • Lynx - create your own lesson plans, edit lessons and group objects together. Offers ranges of clipart, maps, plans and backgrounds • Cambridge-Hitachi - combines the curriculum knowledge of Cambridge University Press and the technology of Hitachi Software Engineering.
Types & Styles • Touch screen, pointing devices, pen control, fixed boards, portable devices, mini computer tablets, wireless, student response systems • Resistive — touchscreens composed of two sheets coated with a resistive material. When contact is made to the surface, the two sheets press together and register the location of the touch. • Electromagnetic — there are magnetic sensors in the board that react and send a message back to the computer when touched by a magnetic pen. • Capacitive — same as electromagnetic, however the wires interact with fingers touching the screen. • Laser — An infrared laser is located in each upper corner of the whiteboard. The laser beam sweeps across the whiteboard surface and reflectors on the pointer or marker reflect the laser beam back to the source for its location. • Ultrasonic - These have two ultrasonic transmitters in two corners and two receivers in the other two corners. The ultrasonic waves are transmitted by the whiteboard surface, that communicate when the screen is touched. • Optical and Infrared — the finger or marker sees the infrared light. Software then manipulates the information to locate the marker.
In Summary • Interactive Whiteboards are an effective tool for differentiating the curriculum • They may be costly to maintain, however, they are very beneficial – easy to use, interactive learning tool • Lots of different resources and software • Various types include; Touch screen, pointing devices, pen control, fixed boards, portable devices, mini computer tablets, wireless, student response systems
