SIP & Conferencing Presented by Roni Even Polycom
SIP Conferencing • History of conferencing work in SIP • Interest in multimedia centralized conferencing was demonstrated by a couple of drafts. A design team was chartered to start the work. • The SIP Conferencing design team is chartered to develop requirements, mechanism, and guidelines for using SIP to support tightly-coupled multiparty conferencing, including "advanced" features such as sidebars and media policy manipulation. Some of the mechanisms proposed will be new protocols or extensions to non-SIP protocols which will be pursued in other IETF Working Groups (ex: MMUSIC, and AVT). SIP Conferencing • History of conferencing work in SIP • After the initial requirement and architecture work, the XCON working group was founded • The work for SIP based conferencing enhancement continues in the SIPPING WG. • The work on conference and media control is part of the XCON WG. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
SIP Conferencing Framework • A Framework for Conferencing with SIP is in draft-ietf-sipping-conferencing-framework-01 Conference Policy Control Protocol Conference Policy Server Conference Policy Membership & Media Policy Participant Focus Conference Notification Service SIP Conference Functions IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
SIP Conferencing Framework • The document presents the overall framework for tightly coupled conferencing. • Focus: The focus is a SIP user agent that is addressed by a conference URI and identifies a conference. • Conference Policy Server: A conference policy server is a logical function which can store and manipulate the conference policy. • Conference Policy Control Protocol (CPCP): The protocol used by clients to manipulate the conference policy. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
SIP Conferencing - Other Drafts • draft-ietf-sipping-conferencing-requirements-00 – High Level Requirements for Tightly Coupled SIP Conferencing • draft-ietf-sipping-cc-conferencing-03 - SIP Call Control - Conferencing for User Agents • Explain how to start create conferences using SIP only methods, by conference aware or un-aware UAs. • Defines the functionality of a conference factory enabling the automatic creation of an ad-hoc conference. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
SIP Conferencing - Other Drafts • draft-ietf-sipping-conference-package-02 - A SIP Event Package for Conference State. • Allows users to subscribe to conference URI. Notifications are sent about changes in the membership of this conference, the status of users' participation in the conference, and the sidebars in the conference. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
XCON • The focus of the Centralized Conferencing WG (XCON) is to develop a standardized suite of protocols for tightly-coupled multimedia conferences, where strong security and authorization requirements are integral to the solution.Tightly-coupled conferences have a central point of control and authorization (known as a focus) so they can enforce specific media and membership relationships, and provide an accurate roster of participants. The media mixing or combining function of a tightly-coupled conference need not be performed centrally. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
XCON WG drafts– current status • draft-ietf-xcon-conference-scenarios-00 – Conferencing scenarios • Describe conference scenarios to be used to verify the proposed protocol. • draft-ietf-xcon-floor-control-req-00 - Requirements for Floor Control Protocol. This document is in working group last call. • draft-ietf-xcon-cpcp-reqs-02 - Requirements for Conference Policy Control Protocol • The document is being discussed in the XCON mailing list. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
XCON drafts– current status • Conference Control • draft-koskelainen-xcon-xcap-cpcp-usage-02 - An Extensible Markup Language (XML) Configuration Access Protocol (XCAP) Usage for Conference Policy Manipulation. • CPCP can be transported using XCAP, the group was asked to consider other transport protocol • Media Control • draft-burger-xcon-mmodels-00 and draft-jennings-xcon-media-control-00. • Those drafts were presented trying to find a simple way to describe the media policy. There is no consensus. IMTC Forum – May 2004 – San Jose, California
