  1. Functional Question Higher (Statistics 12) For the week beginning ….

  2. 75 scientists are trapped in the Antarctic. They have enough food for 30 days on full rations. After 16 days on full rations a rescue party of 9 people arrive. The rescue party brings enough food to increase existing supplies by 60%. The weather then gets worse and both the scientists and the rescue party are trapped. They decide to go on half rations. How many more days before the food runs out? Answer ............................................. days (Total 4 marks)

  3. 14 × 75 (= 1050) B1 - Marks awarded independent of method          ‘Their 1050’ × 1.6 (= 1680) M1 – method mark          ‘Their 1680’ ÷ 84 × 2 Or equivalent M1 – method mark           40 A1 - Accuracy marks are awarded when following on from a correct method Alt           14 × 0.6 (= 8.4) 14 × 1.6 = 22.4 days M1 – method mark           44.8 (for 75) 22.4 ÷ 84 × 75 M1 A1 - Accuracy marks are awarded when following on from a correct method           44.8 ÷ 84 × 75 oe 20 A1 M1 – method mark           40 A1 - Accuracy marks are awarded when following on from a correct method

  4. Common Mistakes – what did the examiners say? Many candidates scored at least one on this question as they calculated 60% of the food or 60% of the remaining days. A common wrong answer was 44.8 which did not take into account the extra people from the rescue party. There were a variety of approaches but full marks were not common.
