Our bodies need food in order to: Grow and repair body tissues Produce heat and energy Regulate body processes Protect us against diseases.
Food and Water...... Can anyone think of any amazing survival stories they may have heard? • Our bodies cannot survive without Food and Water and so, are considered to be a BASIC PHYSICAL NEED. • Physical needs relate directly to body functions and include the provision of food, water, air, rest and shelter. • Has anyone heard of Maslow's ‘Hierarchy of Needs’?
What does this mean? • So what he is saying is that before we can have any success or satisfaction in any other part of our lives, we must first satisfy our physiological needs. • What does this mean to you? - think about how you feel when you are hungry or tired
Through the Years!!! • Prior to European Influence, what did the native Australians eat? • With the increase of migrants, development of technology and the simple convenience of today, the diet of Australians is VERY different. • Research has shown that Australian obesity rates have doubled in the last 20 years. Around 47% of women and 63% of men are overweight or obese which can lead to a multitude of other health issues and diseases. • A staggering 25% of Australian children are overweight
How is it calculated? • Our Body Mass Index is calculated to determine if we are in a healthy weight range. BMI = Weight (Height x Height) weight in kilograms, height in metres..... So, for someone who was 85kg and 170cm tall BMI = 85 (1.7 x 1.7) = 29.4 Calculate your own BMI...
Australians as a society need help!!!!! What can we do?
Methods of evaluating the adequacy of your diet. Examples of what has been used in the past: • Five Food Group approach • Healthy Diet Pyramid • Target on Healthy Eating approach • 12345+ Nutrition Plan approach While they may differ slightly, all have our individual and community well-being at heart. Today, it is recommended that we use the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating developed by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Family services.
Still works around 5 food groups • Vegetables and Legumes • Fruit • Bread, cereals etc • Lean meat, fish, poultry etc • Milk, Yoghurt,cheese • Also encourages plenty of water consumption with only minimal ‘Extra’ foods

BMI – Body Mass Index RDS – Recommended Daily Serves RDI – Recommended Dietary Intake NRV– Nutritional Reference Value Nutrition – the act or process of feeding or being fed Nutrient – a substance that provides food and energy Macronutrients – the main building blocks of the foods we eat (Proteins, carbohydrates, fats) Balanced Meal/Diet – a meal or diet that contains food from each of the food groups in the correct proportions to ensure good health for the individual
