  2. MOUNTAIN WHAT IS A MOUNTAIN? • A natural elevation of the earth's surface. • A large mass. • Has steep sides. • Higher than a hill. • Top comes to a peak, like a point.

  3. HILL WHAT IS A HILL? • Smaller than a mountain. • Top is rounded. • Sloping sides. • An incline, such as a road.

  4. PLATEAU WHAT IS A PLATEAU? • It is high, at least 1,500 feet. • Has a flat surface • Can extend for hundreds of miles • Has at least one steep side

  5. RIVER WHAT IS A RIVER? • Made up of water that continuously flows downward. • Originates from the tops of mountains. • Ends at an ocean or a sea. • Carries rocks and sand with it. • Creates erosion. • Sculptors of land such as channels, canyons, and valleys.

  6. DESERT WHAT IS A DESERT? • Deserts are hot. • A desert is dry or arid. • Receives less than 10% of rain per year.¹ • Covers approximately 1/3 of earth’s surface.² • Made up of sand with limited plant life.

  7. ISLAND WHAT IS AN ISLAND? • Land surrounded by water. • Contains other landforms.

  8. OCEAN WHAT IS AN OCEAN? • A large body of water. • Has waves. • Has plant and animal life. • Has tides.¹ • Has currents.² • Water is salty. Current – A large Amount of water Moving in one direction With great force. Tide – the rise and fall of water caused by gravitational pull from the position of the sun, moon, and rotation of the earth. Happens twice a day.

  9. FOREST WHAT IS A FOREST? • Has numerous trees and plants. • Has animals. • Has bugs.

  10. VALLEY WHAT IS A VALLEY? • Located between mountains and hills. • A deep groove with a river running through it. • Has a V shape.
