Example: I ate the apple. Solutions: 1) Ich aß der Apfel 2) Ich aß den Apfel Search in Google • „aß den Apfel“ gets 118 matching reults • „aß der Apfel“ gets only 2 matching results
Translation by Analogy • Sentences are translated based on their semantic similarity with available examples • Similarity is measured by the distance of words in a thesaurus
English – Japanese ( eat taberu vs. Okasu) Examples: • A man eats vegetables – Hito wa yasai o taberu • Acid eats metal – San wa kinzoku o okasu New sentence: He eats potatoes Here the tranlslation taberu is correctly selected based on the greater semantic similarity of he and potatoes with man and vegetables than with acid and metal.
