Horizontal Directional Drilling Good Practices Guidelines

With development in the drilling and construction industry, major changes have been observed in the drilling techniques used world wide. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is popular among the contractors because it is time saving, requires less resources and feasible in areas where other techniques possess a risk or threat to the surrounding environment. In this piece, We-Bore-It provides a comprehensive take on what HDD is all about and how it is performed.

  1. A Complete Guide To Horizontal Directional Drilling

  2. What is HDD? Horizontal Directional Drilling is a system of drilling, installing or replacing the new pipes under the ground without digging the full ground. It is also called as Directional Drilling, Trench-less Method or HDD.

  3. Introduction ●This type of drilling is done by the drilling rigs. ●It is time saving and doesn’t disturb the land. ●It is used in many projects of pipe fixing, such as the electric, water, gas pipes, telecommunication pipes, sewer pipes and many more. ●It is environment friendly and doesn’t cause any damage or destruction to the landscape. ●The work is completed by using different equipments and workers without jamming the traffic or crowding the place.

  4. A Drilling Rig

  5. Method of Horizontal Directional Drilling ●In this method the group of workers is very small. ●The working equipment includes only a drilling machine and the tracking operator. These are connected to each other electrically. ●The drill fluid helps in starting the drilling of the hole in the ground. ●The drill fluid keeps checking the ground for the type of the land and the stability of the hole.

  6. ●The drill always moves in the arc shapes and exits at the end of the arc from the ground area. ●Then the reamer is entered which is according to the size of the pipes and makes a clear path for the pipes. ●The pipes are entered and fixed and they are heated to connect to each other.

  7. Tools & Equipments Used in HDD ● MWD (Measuring while drilling) sensors ● Mud Motors ● BHA configuration ● Drill bits ● Whip stocks

  8. Pros of HDD ●Doesn’t disturb the area around the project ●Saves money and cost of excavation ●Very safe technique ●Work is not delayed due to improper weather conditions ●Doesn't disrupt traffic ●The work done is neat and faster ●Saves a lot of time ●Flexible method and can be installed in any area

  9. Cons of HDD ●HDD technique has high rate of collapsing ●It can be costly for certain projects ●Work limitation issues due to cobbles and stones scattered on the ground

  10. We-Bore-It has been providing directional boring & trenching services to the Cable, Telecommunications and Wireless industry since 1990. The company was founded with the idea of uniting multiple contracting companies under one umbrella company. After years in the industry, and valuable feedback from customers and partners it became clear that they wanted us to expand our operations from that of local to that of a regional or even nationwide operator. Our goal is to offer our residential and commercial customers a service that focuses on all their underground construction needs.
