The SurrogateRuth Chapter 4 Chapter 4 begins with a typical business transaction What’s for sale? Who can bid? Who’s selling? Witnesses to the transaction
Then, comes an odd twist Boaz says, by the way... 5 “you (also) acquire the dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property”
Deuteronomy 25 5If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her. 6The first son she bears shall carry on the name of the dead brother so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.
When all the information comes to the open, this is the response of the closest kinsman-redeemer… 6At this, the kinsman-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.”
Boaz keeps his word He purchased the land and fulfilled the responsibilities that come with it, which include… Providing an heir for Naomi’s son The son to Mahlon Grandson to Naomi and Elimelech
9Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kilion and Mahlon. 10I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from the town records. Today you are witnesses!”
13So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. Then he went to her, and the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. Obed is considered the son of Naomi
17The women living there said, “Naomi has a son”. Her family has been redeemed The land has been redeemed
Naomi was Mara (bitterness) Naomi is changed from bitterness to blessing When Boaz marries Ruth Ruth is transformed from foreigner to family Boaz, Ruth and Naomi are forever altered From loneliness to love Ruth sets a biblical tone From exclusion to inclusion
Here we see that God does not value nationalism or racial purity However, the most awesome event for which this story prepares us is… Another surrogate birth – That of Jesus He redeems us – the outsiders
Just as Naomi’s grandson, Obed was her’sby proxy… so Jesus was born a surrogate into the line of King David
This story is sublime because… It is prophetic of Christ and his surrogate birth It is the beginning of inclusion of foreign blood into God’s family In Jesus we have the kinsman-redeemer for the world
18This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron, 19Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, 20Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 21Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed, 22Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.
We have to root for Ruth Without Ruth we would still be foreigners to God Still aliens Still outsiders At best, gleaning the leftovers from God’s harvest
But with Ruth we are… • Changed from bitterness to blessing • Transformed from foreigner to family • Altered from loneliness to love • Brought out from exclusion to inclusion • Part of God’s incredible plan of love
