Format of Presentation Each item contains the following: *picture of cover and MARC record *recto/versos pages from book items *any notes relevant to the record for the item
General Notes for Specific Fields • 082 – I used the a field for the DDC call number and the b field for the author’s last name. • 650 – I used the subject headings found on the title page of the book and then confirmed them with LoC. • 658 – I only entered this field for nonfiction items whose curriculum connection was obvious. I did not cite exact objectives. I did not find them to be relevant to the record as curriculum guides change frequently. • 690 – This field was used to document any awards an item has received, or the location for the item in the library. I referred to our Destiny OPAC to keep the records consistent with the format that is currently being maintained.
Notes 300 – I counted the pages so that an accurate number of pages could be recorded for the item. 690 – This field was entered since this book won a Caldecott Award.
Notes 300 – I counted the pages so that an accurate number of pages could be recorded for the item. 690 – This field was added so that patrons would know to locate the item in the Professional Collection. Due to the delicate nature of the pop-up pictures, this item would only be available for staff to secure. (Protocol currently followed at the school.)
Notes We have two copies of this book in our library. One is shelved in the E section and one is shelved in the nonfiction section with call number 651.5. After reading the book and thinking it was appropriate for everyone, and seeing that LoC classifies this book as E, I used the E call number for this item. 300 – I counted the pages so that an accurate number of pages could be recorded for the item. 658 – This book describes a librarian teaching students how to search for information so curriculum connections for Information Literacy and Research were documented in this field.
Notes 300 – I used the MARC Magician suggestion for complicated paging since the pages are not numbered and the page structures vary throughout the book.
Notes 490 – This field was included in the record since this title is part of the Magic Tree House series. Patrons that enjoy the series could find this book through this field. 520 – Since I have not read this book and one was not provided on the title page, I used the summary statement provided by LoC.
Notes 690 – This field was added to the record since this book was a John Newbery Award Winner.
Notes 100 – This field was not entered as there are more than three authors. (MARC Magician directive) 245 – MARC Magician says to list the authors exactly as they appear on the title page in field c so this is the direction I followed. 300 - I counted the pages so that an accurate number of pages could be recorded for the item. 520 – I used the summary statement provided by LoC but tweaked it to be less wordy and more understandable for patrons.
Notes This record was not complicated to create as all of the information was readily available on the recto/versos pages in an easy-to-locate format.
Notes 082 – For this field I referred to my own OPAC to see how it is cataloged. Field a is entered as REF for reference, and field b is entered as the DDC number. I used this format to maintain consistency with my records. 255 – This book has various scales. MARC Magician recommends the term “Scale indeterminate.” 658 – Only Geography and the subdivision, Maps, was entered for this field. I felt that these would be the most useful tags for this item.
Internet Safety: Hot Tips to Keep Cool Kids Safer on the Internet
Notes 082 – For this field I referred to my own OPAC to see how it is cataloged. Field a is entered as DVD, and field b is entered as the DDC number. I used this format to maintain consistency with my records. 245– I kept the “videorecording” term as it is currently used in my OPAC and because it is entered as DVD in the 538 field. 650 – I used LoC to find appropriate subject headings for Internet safety.
