    3. . The Act provides for the conservation and protection of the fauna and flora of Antarctica and the ecosystem upon which they depend. It was amended extensively by the Antarctic Science, Tourism, and Conservation Act of 1996, which was enacted to implement the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty.

    4. The Director of the National Science Foundation is responsible for issuing permits under the Act.
